Cannabis shops face clampdown

The Ministry of Public Health is pushing for a new regulation on cannabis before the next government takes office, with the draft now under review by the Office of the Council of State.

The regulation would mark a major shift in the cannabis sector by restricting sales to designated venues such as hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, herbal shops and authorised folk‑healer premises. Sellers would need to get licences from the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, which also provides mandatory training.

Here in phuket i'd say the number of shops ( 1,032 and counting) selling weed and clubs where you can actually smoke weed ( which was never legal)
have doubled in the past 12 months

there as many weed shops as 7/11's now

If you need to administer cannabis for a medical condition, like back pain, why are you in a club?

It was only even intended for medical use, and the industry really pushed the boundaries to the point it clearly became recreational, and a tourist attraction in its own right.

I'm not anti cannabis, but don't kid yourself that it didn't get out of hand which required a response from government.

In my opinion, the laws, or lack of them, should stay as they were, but the weed shops are closed in, similar to gentlemans clubs, and no administering cannabis (smoking) in a public place, which includes streets, the beach, car parks etc. Basically, smoke in the shop, or at home.

Public possession is fine. Public use should be illegal. That's my 2 baht on it.

Totally agree enforce the laws. Since you can not smoke in public the only places left are your own home or a friends house. Basically if you are not only a long term visa like a expat . Where are you going to smoke it? Full Moon Party morons don,t help matters any. Now there is something the so called Health Minister can moan about.

I typically read of fights in Pattaya, but over in Phuket it's usually just stupid stuff that people did.

Makes sense, all the drunks are in Pattaya and the Pot Heads are in Phuket.

It's got to be the pot, cause it doesn't make you depressed or angry or want to pick a fight like I read about in Pattaya.

But cannabis, it's simple, you will be sleepy, hungry or funny. That's it. We need more alcohol laws to keep tourists and Thai safe. 555

That is nothing no as it was never intended to be smoked in public. Witnessed more than a few shirtless idiots with their female rentals in Hua Hin walking down main street smoking. Police did ZERO!

How many people visit Phuket and how many people visit Pattaya each year? If more people visit Pattaya, fair chance that why there are more reported incidents.

I believe they can smoke at the point of purchase, but it has to be outdoors. So, closed in court yard, roof top etc.

We were discussing smoking, including cigarettes, inside bars, clubs, restaurants etc. This has been illegal in Thailand for years. However, some establishments pay money to authorities to not be fined for allowing it to take place on their premises.

I never said it was illegal. I said it's illegal to smoke it in a public building, the same as cigarettes.
