A crane truck driver has been fined 4,000 baht after the truck’s boom crashed into a pedestrian footbridge outside a well-known school in Bangkok, damaging public property but leaving the structure safe for use. Police confirmed the driver was charged with careless driving causing damage to state property following the late-night incident, which raised safety concerns due to the bridge’s heavy use by students.

The collision occurred at 10.10pm on 10 January on Prajadhipok Road, opposite Satri Suksa School near the Wongwian Lek clock tower in Wat Kanlayan Subdistrict, Thonburi District. The crane truck, part of a construction project, struck the metal railing of a footbridge, bending and breaking more than 10 metres of fencing and damaging a streetlight. The footbridge is located on a key route used daily by schoolchildren and local residents.

On 12 January, Pol Col Phuwadon Unphothi, superintendent of Buppharam Police Station, led officers alongside officials from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Department of Public Works and engineers to inspect the site. Authorities confirmed the damage was limited to railings and roadside fixtures, with no impact on the main structure of the bridge. The inspection was carried out to assess safety and reassure the public.

Investigators later summoned the driver to Buppharam Police Station, where he was formally charged with careless driving causing damage to government property. Police issued an on-the-spot fine of 4,000 baht. The driver declined to speak to reporters before leaving the station on a motorcycle.

Somyot Homchan, an engineer from a private company involved in the project, said the footbridge belongs to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. He stated that the driver’s employer coordinated immediately with engineers and city officials to inspect the site after the crash. Somyot confirmed the bridge remained structurally sound and could continue to be used normally, with repairs to damaged parts to be carried out promptly.

He added that the driver was an outsourced worker hired by the company and had been working on the underground electric railway construction project since early 2025. According to police, the driver admitted he forgot to lower the crane boom before driving. Medical tests found no alcohol or illegal substances in his system at the time of the incident.

Daily News reported that Pol Col Phuwadon said police had warned drivers to remain vigilant and exercise caution, particularly in areas near schools and public facilities. Following the inspection, officials from the Department of Public Works, police, and engineers visited Satri Suksa School to inform teachers that the footbridge was safe for students to use. Authorities said monitoring and repairs would continue to ensure public safety.
