A 20-year-old Myanmar national was killed after large marble slabs collapsed at a marble sales and processing business in Bangkok, causing shock among co-workers who witnessed the incident. The fatal incident occurred at around 10.10am on 13 January at a marble shop inside Soi Rom Klao 25/8, Khlong Sam Prawet subdistrict, Lat Krabang district. Rescue volunteers confirmed the worker died at the scene after being trapped beneath multiple fallen slabs.

Emergency responders from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation were alerted to reports of a person crushed by marble and rushed to the site with cutting, spreading and lifting equipment. The premises were identified as a company involved in manufacturing and importing marble, where a stack of large marble slabs had collapsed. The victim, later identified as Mr Tun Win Ngean, aged 20, a Myanmar national employed as a labourer, was found unconscious and pinned under the stone.

Rescue workers and fellow employees worked together to remove the marble debris in a difficult operation. Once the victim was freed, he was found to have suffered severe injuries, with blood coming from his mouth and nose. Despite rescue efforts, he succumbed to his injuries shortly afterwards and was pronounced dead at the scene.

CCTV footage reviewed by authorities showed events leading up to the collapse. The victim had walked into a narrow gap between stacked marble slabs while two colleagues were nearby. One co-worker was operating a forklift, while another was positioning a marble slab to stack it with others when the slabs suddenly became unstable.

The footage indicated that multiple marble slabs toppled in rapid succession, striking the victim as he stood between them. The sudden collapse left him with no chance to escape, resulting in the fatal injuries. The incident occurred in full view of co-workers, who were unable to intervene in time.

Investigating officers have begun an inquiry into the incident and plan to question all individuals who were present at the time. Police will examine whether workplace safety procedures were followed and if any negligence contributed to the collapse. The victim’s body has been handed over to the Ruamkatanyu Foundation for transfer to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for a post-mortem examination.

Daily News reported that following the autopsy, the deceased’s remains will be released to relatives for religious rites. Authorities have not yet announced whether charges will be filed, pending the outcome of further questioning and forensic results. The investigation remains ongoing as officials seek to establish the cause.
