Fresh Chilli Prices Hit Record Highs in Thailand

Chilli prices in Thailand have skyrocketed, reaching unprecedented levels between 250-350 baht per kilogram. A market survey in Satun's Khuan Kalong district found bird’s eye chillies selling for 300-350 baht per kg and Jinda red chillies at 250 baht. This price surge is affecting vendors who rely on fresh chillies for their products.

The sharp increase is attributed to last November's severe flooding in the south and an ongoing dry season, both impacting crop yields and reducing supply. Vendors are struggling as the cost of chillies is critical for products like chilli paste and ready-to-eat meals. While prices have been rising since last year, some, like a som tum vendor in Khon Kaen, have shifted to using dried chillies due to better value.

In response to these rising costs, some vendors, like a curry paste seller, are absorbing the price hikes, maintaining product prices at previous levels despite slimmer profits. She predicts a price drop in the coming months. Currently, in markets like Talat Thai in the central region, chilli prices vary widely, with red bird’s eye chillies averaging 140-170 baht per kg and green chillies priced at 60-70 baht.

Looking forward, the situation could stabilize if weather conditions improve and enhance the harvest. Until then, vendors and consumers alike must navigate this challenging period as they adjust their purchasing and selling strategies, reported Thai Newsroom.

Key Takeaways

  • Fresh chilli prices in Thailand have reached all-time highs due to climate issues.

  • Vendors are adapting by switching to alternative products or absorbing costs.

  • A decrease in chilli prices is anticipated within two months.
