A 53-year-old man was shot dead while foraging in forest land after a hunter mistook movement in bushes for a wild chicken and fired a single shot. The incident occurred on 13 January, prompting an immediate police investigation and the surrender of the shooter..

Police were alerted on 13 January by the gunman, who reported that he had shot and killed a person in woodland near Huai Phao Reservoir at Doi Mon Pa Sang. The location was in Moo 1, Ban Luniket, Huai Mai subdistrict, Song district, Phrae.

The notification was received by Pol Lt Col Somsak Chaiwong, an investigator at Song Police Station. He coordinated with the Luniket rescue foundation, police investigators, and an on-duty doctor from Song Hospital to attend the scene.

The area where the shooting occurred was described as a forest road surrounded by tall grass and maize fields. In the middle of the road, officers found the body of the deceased, later identified as Mr Somkid, aged 53.

Mr Somkid was wearing a long-sleeved green shirt and camouflage trousers. Examination found gunshot wounds to the chest and neck, with the bullet exiting through the back of the head, causing fatal injuries.

Beside the body were personal items including a water container and a large shoulder bag. Inside the bag was a bamboo rice container containing a red ant nest, indicating the victim had been collecting forest produce at the time.

The shooter, Mr Natthaphon, aged 31, told police he was from Nan province and had been growing cabbage near the incident site. He said he was carrying a firearm while hunting animals and looking for wild chickens. While lying in wait, he noticed movement in nearby vegetation and fired a single shot.

After hearing a person cry out in pain, he ran to the spot and realised he had shot another forest forager. Mr Natthaphon then rode his motorcycle to Song Police Station to report the incident and surrendered himself. He stated he had no intention to kill anyone and believed he was shooting at a wild chicken when he pulled the trigger.

SiamNews reported that police later took the suspect back to the scene to reconstruct the events as part of his confession. The victim’s body was transported to Song Hospital for further post-mortem examination before being released to relatives for funeral rites according to local tradition.
