Police at Huai Khwang have charged a Route 137 bus driver with careless driving after a bus reportedly suffered brake failure and crashed into an MRT Authority fire and rescue vehicle, injuring 11 people in Bangkok.

The collision occurred beneath the car park building at MRT Cultural Centre station in Din Daeng district, Bangkok, during the early evening of 13 January. Officers found an air-conditioned public bus operating on Route 137, which runs between Ratchadaphisek and Ramkhamhaeng, had struck a parked MRT Authority fire and rescue vehicle. Eleven people were injured, including the bus driver, the conductor and passengers, and no deaths were reported.

According to police at Huai Khwang station, the incident caused damage to MRT Authority property, including the fire and rescue vehicle and a structural pillar of the Cultural Centre station car park. Emergency services responded after receiving a radio report of the crash and injured individuals were taken for medical treatment. The area around the car park was secured while officers carried out inspections.

Providing background on the case, Huai Khwang police chief Pol Col Sorasak Thongmee said investigators attended the scene at Ratchadaphisek Soi 6 after reports of a public bus colliding with an MRT Authority vehicle. The damaged assets were confirmed to belong to the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand and all injuries were described as life threatening. The bus involved was identified as a Route 137 service.

Initial questioning of the driver, identified as Thongkham, aged 44, stated the bus experienced a stuck accelerator and brake failure, leaving him unable to stop the vehicle. Police conducted a breathalyser test at the scene, which showed no presence of alcohol. Based on preliminary findings, officers charged the driver with careless driving causing injury to others.

The case highlights concerns over vehicle safety and maintenance on public transport routes operating through densely populated urban areas. The damage to MRT infrastructure also has implications for repair costs and potential service disruptions around the Cultural Centre station car park.

Matichon reportedd that the suspect has been handed over to investigators at Huai Khwang police station to face legal proceedings. Further technical inspections of the bus are expected to determine the precise cause of the alleged mechanical failure. Police will also assess the full extent of property damage as part of the case.
