Fire Erupts After Oil Tanker Crash in Korat Hills

A trailer truck collided with another vehicle near the Faculty of Forestry research and training station on Highway 304 in Nakhon Ratchasima, sparking a fire on Thursday morning. The accident, involving an empty oil tanker and a paper-laden trailer, occurred around 10:30 a.m. The impact left the tanker driver injured, suffering a head wound, but no severe disaster was reported due to the tanker's empty state.

Families of the victims killed in a crane accident in Nakhon Ratchasima will receive 1.69 million baht each, as announced by Governor Anupong Suksomnit. The compensation is comprised of contributions from the State Railway of Thailand, insurance, the Compensation for Victims and Defendants in Criminal Cases Act, and the contractor Italian-Thai Development Plc. Injured individuals will receive an initial 50,000 baht with the potential for additional compensation.

The Department of Business Development (DBD) and the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) have launched investigations into law and audit firms suspected of facilitating the illegal acquisition of Thai land by foreigners through nominee arrangements. DBD Director-General Poonpong Naiyanapakorn announced that 86 cases have been recorded in recent months, with legal proceedings initiated. A spate of crane accidents at railway sites in Thailand has led Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn to suspend 13 construction projects by the responsible contractor. The immediate halt follows safety incidents in Sikhio, Nakhon Ratchasima, and on Rama 2 Road. The Minister has indicated intentions to terminate contracts and blacklist the contractor involved.

Economic Strain Drives Cambodians to Cross Thai Border

Thai authorities detained 99 Cambodian workers crossing illegally into Thailand on January 16, 2026. A Nigerian national, Ukoma Jefta Nuzbech, was apprehended on Koh Pha Ngan, Surat Thani, on January 14, after evading court from an earlier drug-related arrest. Authorities intervened after receiving a tip-off about his whereabouts. Nuzbech had avoided legal proceedings following his arrest last March for delivering 25.71 grammes of cocaine to an undercover officer.
