Crackdown on illegal foreign workers in Thai-only jobs

Thai officials ramped up enforcement against illegal foreign workers infringing on jobs reserved for Thais, following significant discoveries that raised local employment concerns. Colonel Nipon Inmai, deputy director of internal security in Chumphon Province, headed a team led by Major Kobsak Nakharn from the 403 Labour advocacy and inspection unit to inspect potentially unlawful employment practices.

During an inspection of a rubber wood processing company in Sawi District, two Myanmar nationals, Zaw Myo Htike, 42, and You Min Thu, 30, were found working beyond the legal scope permitted by law. This activity violates Section 8 of the 2017 Alien Employment Act, which reserves certain jobs for Thai workers.

The two individuals were detained and sent to Sawi police station for legal processing, with authorities sternly warning employers to adhere strictly to the law, citing severe penalties for violations.

The Internal Security Operations Command in Chumphon stressed the importance of ongoing inspections to protect Thai jobs and uphold fairness in the labour market. Employers face legal consequences, including fines and imprisonment, for unlawfully employing foreign workers in prohibited roles.

Citizens are urged to report any suspected illegal employment to maintain order and safety in their communities.

Looking ahead, these actions highlight the government's commitment to tightening regulations and preserving job opportunities for Thai nationals. The ongoing inspections and community cooperation are expected to strengthen the integrity of the labour market and ensure legal compliance among businesses operating in the region, according to The Daily News.
