Plankton Bloom Tints Thailand's Cha-am Beach Green

Tourists at Cha-am and Bo Yai Beaches in Phetchaburi were surprised by a dark green sea on January 15 due to a natural plankton bloom. The green tint covered 2.5 kilometers of coastline, drawing curious looks from beachgoers, some of whom continued to swim despite the unusual water color. Officials quickly assessed the situation and confirmed that the phenomenon was harmless.

Plankton blooms occur when plant-like plankton rapidly increase and concentrate, changing water color. This specific bloom was most apparent on the southern stretches of Cha-am Beach and near Ban Bo Yai Beach in Bang Kao subdistrict. The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources team, led by marine scientist Narongrit Lertkasetwittaya, tested the water and found no abnormal smells or concerning changes in pH, salinity, temperature, or dissolved oxygen.

Authorities assure that the water remains safe for recreational activities, though individuals with sensitive skin might experience mild irritation. It's recommended that swimmers rinse with clean water afterward to avoid potential discomfort. Officials expect the bloom to resolve naturally within a few days, bringing the water back to its usual clarity.

While Cha-am Beach experienced a natural makeover, a different transformation marked Patong Beach after New Year's celebrations. Revelers left a large amount of garbage, including glass bottles and beer cans, tarnishing the famed white sands. Clean-up efforts were needed to restore its pristine condition.

Authorities continue monitoring the situation and updating locals and tourists on water safety. Those planning visits in the coming days can anticipate a swift return to normalcy as the bloom dissipates, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • A natural plankton bloom turned the sea at Cha-am Beach green.

  • Officials have declared the beach water safe despite its unusual color.

  • The plankton bloom is expected to clear in two to three days.
