A fire broke out at a pier of Bhumibol Bridge 2 in Phra Pradaeng, Samut Prakan, on Wednesday evening, quickly prompting action from local authorities. Over ten fire engines were deployed to manage the blaze, which was successfully contained in just over an hour. Fortunately, officials have confirmed there was no damage to the bridge's main structure.

The fire began around 7pm, igniting a large black PPE drainage pipe that channels runoff from the bridge to the ground. Flames spread rapidly, causing panic among nearby motorists and residents. Witnesses reported seeing children playing with toy cap guns in the area before the fire started.

Firefighters utilized water to control the blaze, preventing it from reaching the bridge's main structure. The situation was managed after roughly 1.5 hours of intensive efforts. Rewat Sukkham of the Department of Rural Highways reassured the public that the bridge remains safe.

Authorities have initiated a thorough inspection of the site, led by a team of specialist engineers, to ensure there is no lingering risk to the structure. Initial findings by Phra Pradaeng district security chief Prin Jawathiyakul suggest the fire originated from sparks near the base of the pier, which then traveled upwards.

Looking forward, this incident has highlighted the importance of safety measures around key infrastructures. The upcoming inspection results will determine if further action is needed to prevent similar incidents. Meanwhile, residents are urged to report any suspicious activities around such vital areas, reported Thai PBS.

Key Takeaways

  • Fire at Bhumibol Bridge 2 contained swiftly with no structural damage.

  • Initial findings point to toy gunplay as a possible fire source.

  • Further safety inspections are underway at the bridge site.

Child's Firecrackers Cause 1 Million Baht Bridge Damage

A fire caused by a child setting off firecrackers at Bhumibol 2 Bridge has led Thailand’s Ministry of Transport to seek around 1 million baht in compensation from the child’s parents. The incident occurred on January 15 in Samut Prakan, spreading flames to a drainage pipe and damaging the bridge beam located 50 meters above ground. Immediate action by the Department of Rural Roads and firefighting teams brought the fire under control within an hour.

Initially, rumors suggested significant structural damage and a 15 million baht compensation. However, the Department of Rural Roads clarified the damage was minor, estimated at about 1 million baht, and confirmed the cause was due to firecrackers. Online media had alleged the child responsible was detained, and these claims were also refuted by officials.

A legal complaint has been filed against the child and the parents. If they cannot pay the compensation, the case will proceed to court. The police, currently only documenting the incident, have not pressed charges due to the child's minor status and did not reveal further legal actions.

In a similar case, three minors aged nine to 15 were previously taken into custody for attempted murder after attacking a homeless man in Bangkok. The victim reported past bullying by the group, though he had no direct conflicts with them, a claim supported by local residents who vouched for his peaceful presence, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • The Ministry is pursuing 1 million baht in damages due to firecracker-induced damage.

  • The Department of Rural Roads confirmed minor damage, contradicting earlier severe claims.

  • Legal proceedings may escalate if compensation is unmet by the family.
