Trump Threatens Tariffs on Nations Rejecting Greenland Takeover

With high tariffs, it's not a free market, it's the opposite of a free market. If a local manufacturer doesn't have competition they don't innovate.

I buy imported cars because they are better than locally produced ones, I bought a German EV because there were none available locally and Chinese EV's (the most advanced in the world) had high tariffs. High tariffs meant no competition so the local Japanese auto manufacturers rested on their laurels and stopped innovating.

Once the tariffs were removed, Chinese EV's now dominate the EV market and local auto manufacturers are 2 generations behind and struggling to catch up and even exiting Thailand and closing factories.

Tariffs are useful to protect local industry, but they stifle innovation and stifle customer choice.

100% tariffs on Chinese EV's is the only thing keeping American auto manufacturers alive. But the poor consumer has to pay double to buy a better Chinese one so they don't - definitely not good for residents but great for Ford, Chevrolet et al.

Okay

How is this any different from local mafia/thugs demanding 'protection money' from the local baker or bar owner, with threats against his business if he doesn't comply? It's not different of course. I

The world has mishandled Trump's Tariffs. There is only one way to deal with a bully.

Well he can kiss his World Cup Finals away as most European teams will boycott it. Which in my opinion will good for us all as the Yanks will spoil it with there over the top Hype and Razzamtaz. Stick to the game you know like Baseball ( Rounders what we played at School in the UK ) and that game with the padding and crash helmets.

Not many people in the US give a rat's about the World Cup, and the ones that do are mostly immigrants.

What claim have I made that needs supporting?

Are you saying that rich yanks do not buy imported stuff?

Or are you saying higher taxes don't benefit all yanks?

I give up, who?

What cheap products does Denmark export to the US?

Deflection blah blah.

So you have no source confirming that: "The rich yanks buy imported stuff, and the tax collected benefits all yanks. It's collectivism, you should love it."

You made that up! 😀

More nonsense, stop talking like everyone thinks like you, it's no wonder you support Trump..............🤐

How did this Greenland talk come about? Yeah, Trump first made mention of it in 2019 but then it faded from discussion. Completely. And now? Two months ago, Greenland wasn't on anybody's mind. Then, Trump gets a bug up his ass out of nowhere. Nobody discussed this in the presidential campaign. Nobody for the past year has made mention of it. If Trump is going to start World War III shouldn't it at least have got an airing among the American public before Trump goes off the deep end? This is just more chaos. Everything Trump does is incoherent and often at cross purposes.

WWIII? Russia and China are going to join with the EU to stop Greenland from becoming a US territory?

The EU might well side with China, now. They were already inclined to do so. Canada already has.

That's great news! Anything to get Trump and restart the flow if illegals into the US.

Actually, your response was much longer, which I addressed, but you are correct, I ignored your first question.

Thank you.

I have not claimed that Truman considered invading it, but did FDR not occupy it for a few years during WWII?

I used Truman to illustrate the fact that anything is theoretically possible. I did not suggest that you claimed that Truman considered invading Greenland nor do I believe that he - or any other President - considered it which imo is an indictment of Trump in itself.

The US did effectively control Greenland during WW2 but the fundamental differences between then and now are that it was done 1) in order to prevent Greenland being invaded by Germany and 2) with the approval of Denmark, not in opposition to their wishes.

I support the US acquiring Greenland peacefully.

Fine. No harm in asking if it's for sale and if Greenlanders want to become part of the US. If the answer is positive all well and good, continue with the negotiation. However, a negative reply such as is the case now should be respected and not met with threats of economic sanctions and invasion.

1 hour ago, Yellowtail said:

I don't know why. I think first post of mine in this thread that you responded to was: "The US has tried to acquire Greenland for strategic reasons numerous times over the last 100-150 years, but all the sudden it is somehow ridiculous."

1 hour ago, Yellowtail said:

I thought that post made it clear that my point was that the idea of US acquiring Greenland is not ridiculous.

So why bring it up?

I've agreed that it is not ridiculous to ask the question and as far as I can tell, no one has stated otherwise in this thread. However, to repeat yet again, what I and others object to is Trump's response I.e. the threats. I asked you if you thought that Denmark's and Greenland's rejection of the offer justified Trump's response and until your penultimate post, you were unwilling to directly answer this question.

Trump being Trump now has Macron and the EU now considering activating their anti-coercion rules, which if indeed done will really hurt US companies.

Also treated Canada so badly that Carney said when asked, “Canada’s water is for Canadians.”

Way to go Donald.

Didn't Trump endorse Carney over the other guy in the election? There is no reasoning behind most Trump actions. I think that in the next month or two, they (whoever they are) are going to have to drag Trump kicking and screaming from the White House to a mental asylum.

Donnie does. Trump brought the World Cup to America.

(USA, Mexico and Canada).

But Donnie shouldn't have gotten away with his unsportsmanlike manner. He had threatened to withdraw economic support from countries if they did not vote for the United States. This is a clear violation of FIFA rules. Fifa President Gianni Infantino, who is committed to neutrality, also behaved in a partisan manner and tried to exclude Morocco. That's how badly he needs the American money. All of this makes FIFA’s decision unbearable.

I'm surprised that you might expect any better from FIFA. It is corrupt to its core and has been for 60+ years.

Previously when people suggested that Trump was mad, I replied that I thought that he was an egotistical, slightly eccentric narcissist who didn't seem to care one way or the about facts or the truth; however, I didn't think that he was mad. Clearly, I was wrong about that

No, I didn't expect anything better from FIFA, nor anything better from Donnie. But I'm happy for him that he now has 2 peace prizes, one from FIFA and one illegally given.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/europe-wield-8-trillion-sell-174459640.html

Europe can wield this $8 trillion ‘sell America’ weapon as Trump reignites a trade war over his Greenland conquest ambitions

But the U.S. has a key vulnerability the EU can exploit, according to George Saravelos, head of FX research at Deutsche Bank.

For example, offsetting the U.S. trade imbalance requires heavy inflows of capital from abroad. Meanwhile, the Treasury Department must also finance budget gaps by issuing more debt, often to foreign investors.

“European countries own $8 trillion of US bonds and equities, almost twice as much as the rest of the world combined,” Saravelos pointed out. “In an environment where the geoeconomic stability of the western alliance is being disrupted existentially, it is not clear why Europeans would be as willing to play this part.”

Donnies message o the Norwegian Prime Minister.

“Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America,”

Well done Blondie!

The rest of the world has to boycott the USA, and Donald J Trump, JP Vance and the bunch.

maybe the rest of the people in the USA will notice and tell Trump to back off.

Agreed. A good start would be to tax the US internet companies. Buy non-US wherever feasible.

Trump has now turned his attention back to acquiring Canada, stating Canada’s vulnerability to adversaries.

Perhaps Canada should tell him they want Alaska as a buffer for their northern flank security.
