Six Thai nationals were arrested in the early hours of 16 January 2026 after being intercepted while illegally crossing back into Thailand from Cambodia near the Aranyaprathet border district in Sa Kaeo province. The group, made up of four men and two women, was stopped by rangers from the Burapha Task Force while walking through a sugarcane field around 450 metres from the border. Authorities said the arrests highlighted ongoing attempts to evade partial border closures and immigration checks.

The incident occurred at about 01.00 on 16 January 2026, when Colonel Chainarong Kasee, commander of the Aranyaprathet Task Force, ordered intensified patrols along the border seam. Rangers from Company 1204 were conducting patrols between checkpoints 58 and 59 near Ban Non Sao-E, Moo 2, Phan Suek subdistrict, Aranyaprathet district, when they spotted a suspicious group moving on foot. Upon inspection, all six were confirmed to be Thai nationals who had entered the country unlawfully.

During initial questioning, the suspects admitted they had previously crossed into Poipet, Cambodia, via the Khlong Luek border checkpoint to work as administrators for an online gambling website in Zone 3. One Thai woman told officers she became pregnant while working in Poipet and wanted to return to Thailand to register for antenatal care and give birth. The remaining suspects claimed they were returning to Thailand to seek treatment for underlying medical conditions and to go back to their home provinces.

The group also disclosed that they had each paid more than 10,000 baht to Cambodian guides to lead them through natural border routes to avoid immigration checkpoints. They said the decision was driven by ongoing partial border closures and concerns about background checks. According to their statements, the guides escorted them close to the Thai side before pointing out a route to continue on foot, where they were later apprehended by rangers.

Security officials said the case reflected a broader pattern of Thai nationals working in gambling operations across the border and attempting to re-enter Thailand illegally. Border forces have maintained heightened patrols to curb illegal crossings, human smuggling, and transnational crime linked to online gambling networks. The arrests underscore the continued enforcement focus along the Thai–Cambodian frontier.

The Daily News reported that the six suspects were handed over to investigators at Khlong Nam Sai Police Station for detailed background checks. Authorities will proceed with legal action under immigration laws related to illegal entry. Further investigation is expected to determine whether additional offences, including links to online gambling operations, will be pursued.
