A police officer in Thailand was dismissed and four others are under investigation for allegedly accepting bribes to unlawfully release Chinese suspects. The scandal was uncovered after the disappearance of Ma Guangxu, also known as Ah-hang, from a detention facility. The investigation by the Metropolitan Police Bureau linked five officers to this organized scheme aimed at helping Chinese suspects evade justice.

The officers allegedly orchestrated the filing of false criminal complaints against the suspects to manipulate the legal system. These complaints were used as a pretext to delay deportations, resulting in the suspects being temporarily transferred out of immigration detention. Once out, the officers reportedly allowed them to escape, receiving bribes between hundreds of thousands and several million baht for each case.

Reports suggest that many released Chinese nationals were part of call centre scam operations facing severe penalties in China. Deputy Spokesperson of the Royal Thai Police, Trirong Phewphan, disclosed that preliminary findings indicate that 131 Chinese suspects might have been released under the scheme from 2021 to 2025. One officer, now dismissed, was allegedly responsible for the release of over 30 suspects.

Looking ahead, a thorough review of foreign suspect releases from 2021 to 2026 will be conducted. Authorities have committed to holding all involved officers accountable. In a related incident, a Thai woman criticized Tak Provincial Immigration for deporting Burmese suspects involved in a serious crime without legal consequences. Officers have vowed to collaborate with Burmese authorities to address the issue, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • A corruption scheme involving Thai officers released over 100 Chinese suspects.

  • Bribes for these releases ranged from hundreds of thousands to millions of baht.

  • A comprehensive investigation into foreign suspect releases is underway.
