Thai, Chinese and Myanmar authorities have begun repatriating Chinese nationals linked to scam operations in Myawaddy, Myanmar, with more than 300 people sent back to China on the first day of the operation. The transfers took place on 20 January 2026 and mark the start of a four-day plan to return a total of 1,108 individuals involved in cyber fraud networks targeting victims worldwide.

The repatriation is being carried out under a trilateral cooperation framework between Thailand, China and Myanmar aimed at suppressing transnational cybercrime. The suspects were previously transferred across the border at Mae Sot district in Tak province before being flown to China via Mae Sot Airport on chartered flights operated by China Southern Airlines. Thai immigration authorities confirmed that all returnees processed in Thailand have been formally blacklisted and barred from re-entering the country.

The operation follows sustained pressure from regional governments to dismantle scam compounds operating along the Thai–Myanmar border, particularly in Myawaddy, which has become a hub for call centre fraud and online scams. These networks have been linked to widespread financial losses affecting victims in Asia and beyond. The current repatriation plan covers the period from 20 to 23 January and involves multiple coordinated flights.

On the first day, more than 300 Chinese nationals were transferred, most of whom had been held in immigration detention facilities in Tak province. Thai officials conducted background checks, collected biometric data and recorded personal identification details before entering the individuals into the national blacklist system. Authorities stated that these measures are intended to prevent repeat offences and stop previously deported suspects from returning to Thailand.

The joint operation highlights growing regional cooperation against cyber-enabled crime, with Thailand acting as a key transit and processing point. Chinese authorities are expected to take further legal action against the returnees upon arrival, while Myanmar continues to coordinate the handover of remaining suspects. Officials have emphasised that the process adheres strictly to legal and immigration procedures in all three countries.

Daily News reported that further repatriation flights are scheduled over the coming days to complete the transfer of all 1,108 individuals. Authorities have indicated that similar operations may continue if additional suspects are identified in border areas. The trilateral mechanism is expected to remain active as governments seek to disrupt scam networks and reduce the risk of cross-border cybercrime.

I'm sure I saw this story previously. Or is this just the first repatriation for 2026? Would like to know what happens to them when they get back to China. Released or arrested and investigated?

I would suggest that the dates in the article, if you read it are a give away that this is a new story.

There is even a link to the previous flights story in the related stories.
