Brussels set to sign 'mother of all deals' with India

The EU was on the cusp of signing a historic trade agreement with India, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said, indicating long-running talks had been completed.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, she said the agreement would create a market for 2 billion people.

“Right after Davos, I’ll travel to India. There’s still work to do. But we are on the cusp of a historic trade agreement. Some call it the mother of all deals," Ms Von der Leyen said on Tuesday.

Spain’s foreign minister Jose Manuel Albares also expressed optimism during a visit to Delhi on Wednesday morning, telling reporters that a deal is likely to be concluded in the coming days.

The EU is India’s largest trading partner, ahead of the US and China. In 2023-24, their trade was worth more than $130bn, an increase of almost 90 per cent over the past decade. Nearly 6,000 European companies operate in India.

Their "trade agreement" means millions of Indians pouring into Europe. It means privatized profits for companies who hire them and socialized loses for the Europeans who will have their city ruined by uncivilized people.

I was open minded up to a point but women need to be barred from voting or holding office until we can figure out a better arrangement. There's just too much risk involved to even bother entering the idea anymore.

The agreement is for professionals in fields such as IT, engineering and business sectors.

The visas are temporary and include salary thresholds, stipulating job offers from EU companies and valid sponsorship.

Similar to last year's UK- India pact.

This deal is a mistake. I'm happy to observe it from a distance.

Wait a few years, and the Europeans will be unhappy with this deal. At least the Europeans working in IT fields.

South America, India, China, Asia, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the more the merrier.

If the EU's not trading with the US Trump's tariffs mean nothing and so lose any leverage,

All countries that now have had tariffs imposed (thats just about every country in the world) on their goods and agreements ripped up have had enough and are looking elsewhere to trade.

So bye bye USA it was fun while it lasted.

The trade agreement gives EU companies improved access to India's markets, currently shielded by relatively high tariffs (averaging 9.3%).

Lower duties will benefit EU companies involved in aircrafts and parts, industrial machinery, electrical equipment, diamonds, and chemicals. It is expected there will be substantial reductions in tariff levels for luxury imported items such as cars, wines and spirits too.

Finally, EU firms will have greater access to the Indian market in public procurement, intellectual property services, IT, and telecommunications.

Sure, point taken.

On the other hand seems to me that there will soon be a twist in the players in international trade to sideline / sidestep trump and his taxes / import duties etc. It's very possibe and has to come. Additionally China has many clever negotiators and clever trading organizations who can find / invent / create massive and successful trade with other countries.

Slurrpys for everyone.

Yeah because the EU doesn't need high paying IT jobs and everyone is fully employed?

They do this same <deleted> in the US. Record number of new graduates in IT are unemployed and they still bring in foreign labor to compete with them.

Apparently, the EU didn't learn a thing from the H-1 B visa debacle in the USA.

The EU employment rate for recent tertiary graduates (aged 20-34) was around 82.3% in 2024 with the ICT sector generally showing high growth, indicating strong demand for skilled specialists.

If you look at so many of the contentious issues of our time you can see under the hood it's actually just women voting against men.

We know about the disagreements you get in with the women in your life and how you can't see eye to eye and often just put it down to women being irrational creatures. Well guess what? Now that same dynamic has spilled out in to politics and being played out at the societal level.

Mass immigration for example can't be ended by voting because of the female vote and they can't even see the issue because they don't think on civilizational terms like men do. I don't know what to do about it but it's a total disaster.

Exactly. They still have their own people looking for work and they're going to make it even more difficult for them. Imagine if this was Thailand doing this. I don't see how it's anything other than treason.

The West does not look after its own citizens. Back when Clinton granted China favored-nation trading status, it lost 3.7 million jobs, according to the EPI. This was devastating to many small towns in the Midwest.

https://www.epi.org/blog/china-trade-deal-will-not-restore-3-7-million-u-s-jobs-lost-since-china-entered-the-wto-in-2001/

Then we have the H1B visas, which are abused by people from India.

Now the EU is repeating this mistake.

NEW DELHI/BRUSSELS, Jan 25 (Reuters) - India plans to slash tariffs on cars imported from the European Union to 40% from as high as 110%, sources said, in the biggest opening yet of the country's vast market as the two sides close in on a free trade pact that could come as early as Tuesday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has agreed to immediately reduce the tax on a limited number of cars from the 27-nation bloc with an import price of more than 15,000 euros ($17,739), two sources briefed on the talks told Reuters.

This will be further lowered to 10% over time, they added, easing access to the Indian market for European automakers such as Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

The Indian ambassador car. They were ubiquitous when I visited India in the 1980s.

India is the world's third-largest car market by sales after the U.S. and China, but its domestic auto industry has been one of the most protected. New Delhi currently levies tariffs of 70% and 110% on imported cars, a level often criticised by executives, including Tesla chief Elon Musk.

If EU citizens can't find jobs how will Indians? "Cheap" doesn't create jobs from thin air.

If it means cheap Indians are willing to fill the jobs Europeans don't want them that is a different matter.

They will work for lower wages and gradually displace the local population.

It seems like the college-educated left-wing women hate Western Civilization.  I don't understand their motivations.

Any time a person says "jobs the locals won't do" you always need to respond "at what price?" because THAT is the determinate factor in employment.

It all comes down to female nature. I just saw this on X a couple days ago.

Quote:

"When researchers shocked players for playing fairly, both men and women observers felt empathy for them.

However when researchers shocked players for cheating, male empathy went way down and their pleasure centers lit up. While women’s response was basically unchanged regardless of the players behavior."

The idea that your success is an accident of your birth instead of her civilizational inheritance is neurologically female and they vote they play this out in politics. In their mind countries are poor by accident and simply relocating them solves this problem. Anything else would be unfair.

Western countries are dominated by female mindedness (even in men, especially liberal men) so here we are today. Notice how the liberals are fighting against the police trying to deport criminal aliens. They have no concept of why cheating on this civilizational level is unfair and so they protect their enemies against their own people.

As usual, obsessed posters are derailing another topic into an immigration topic! 😅

Which sensible nation can now ignore India for trade deals ? India, who has a higher GDP then France, Italy or the UK ?

Doesn't this new agreement drive more immigration?

It's certainly not the only significant aspect of this deal.

As concerns immigration, It's about controlled immigration. Similar to Canada's policy. It facilitates immigration if there is a match between the applicants and the jobs offered (see other posts and links). For example, Europe needs IT specialists and there aren't enough. India can provide some of the missing resources.
