Thailand's Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Tantai Narongkoon, CEO of Titan Capital Group Holdings Co Ltd, over allegations of intellectual property infringement. The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) claims that Tantai, along with six others, pirated foreign films via a streaming site, causing approximately 4.5 billion baht in damages. The infringement is linked to money-laundering charges as a predicate offence.

The DSI acted after receiving a complaint from Atiwat Puttharoj on behalf of the film rights holders. The complaint detailed that films were streamed illegally on www.moviebfree.com, which also advertised online gambling. On January 22, the court approved the arrest warrant, marking a significant legal step in addressing the large-scale piracy operation.

Investigators discovered that Tantai collaborated with Nuwat Yongyuth and others to operate an online gambling site promoted through the movie streaming platform. Testimony from a witness, the owner of www.sakkarinsaid.com, supported these charges, further alleging financial transactions related to advertising.

As the case unfolds, it underscores the broader issue of intellectual property infringement and its ties to other illicit activities. Experts suggest that this development could prompt tighter regulations on digital content and gambling advertising in Thailand. The case is being closely monitored, and further legal actions are anticipated as the investigation progresses, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • Tantai Narongkoon faces charges over film piracy and money laundering.

  • The DSI's investigation links the streaming site to illegal gambling ads.

  • Court approval of the arrest warrant signals intensified legal scrutiny.
