The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced plans to launch the Metro Rail Transit Line 7 (MRT-7) and the Philippine National Railway (PNR) North-South Commuter Railway by next year. Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez expressed confidence in achieving full operations for MRT-7 by the second quarter of 2027 or earlier. He has urged San Miguel Corp., responsible for the MRT-7 project, to expedite its completion.

MRT-7 will consist of 12 stations, stretching from North Caloocan to North Avenue in Quezon City, aiming to serve an average of 500,000 passengers daily. In parallel, the PNR North-South Commuter Railway segment between Valenzuela City and Malolos City is also set for launch by 2027. The PNR project is currently 90 percent complete but faces challenges due to pending right of way issues, which the DOTr plans to resolve by the second quarter of 2026.

Experts view these projects as critical to easing traffic congestion and improving public transport efficiency in the region. The potential economic boost and enhanced connectivity are seen as significant benefits. However, the delays in addressing the right of way issues could impact the timelines, adding pressure on the authorities to meet their targets.

Looking forward, the DOTr's focus will be on overcoming the remaining hurdles to ensure timely completion. Finalizing agreements related to right of way and maintaining project momentum will be essential. Continuing collaboration with San Miguel Corp. and other stakeholders remains crucial in the months leading up to 2027, reported Philstar.
