Canada rallies 40 nations in new trade bloc

Nearly 40 countries are quietly building a new global trade alliance as frustration grows with the confrontational policies of US President Donald Trump.

Led by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, the coalition brings together the European Union and members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans‑Pacific Partnership bloc. Diplomats say the group is exploring sweeping reforms to global trade rules — and may even build an alternative system if current institutions fail.

A quiet revolt against Washington’s trade strategy

The initiative reflects growing unease among US allies who say Washington’s tariff policies and institutional blockades have weakened the global trading order.

At the centre of the dispute is the crisis at the World Trade Organization, whose dispute settlement system has been paralysed after years of US opposition.

Trade analysts say the impasse has forced major economies to consider new frameworks to enforce rules and resolve disputes outside the WTO system.

Irony at the heart of the crisis

Some experts argue Trump’s policies may unintentionally accelerate the creation of a new trade architecture.

John Ferguson of Economist Impact said the breakdown of the current order could push major economies to construct a more resilient system.

In that sense, he suggested, the president who disrupted the rules-based system might also become the catalyst for its replacement.

Talks target digital trade and supply chains

Negotiators from Europe and Indo-Pacific economies are now discussing deeper cooperation in areas ranging from digital trade rules to supply-chain resilience and investment standards.

Diplomats say a joint declaration on WTO reform is already being drafted, though negotiations over the final language are ongoing.

The goal, officials insist, is not necessarily to abandon the WTO — but to create a parallel structure capable of functioning if it remains paralysed.

Middle powers step into the vacuum

Canada has positioned itself at the centre of the effort, bringing together what officials describe as “middle powers” seeking stability in an increasingly fractured global economy.

Analysts say the initiative reflects a strategic shift as countries try to reduce reliance on US leadership in trade governance.

If the coalition succeeds, the implications could be profound — potentially reshaping global commerce and weakening Washington’s influence over the rules that govern it.

If the UK is not part of the it should be and I hope it is.

The sooner the world's economies are isolated from the chaos and unpredictability of Trumps America the better.

I believe China is going to be the biggest beneficiary in all this with the USA being increasingly sidelined.

Just look at what they are doing to economies around the world now and thats without the stupid tariffs, the only ally they have now is Israel though even that is more like the tail wagging the dog.

King Carney has a nice ring to it. Much better than king trump.

I wonder if Alberta will join? coffee1

it's definitely good - but the proof will be in the action - if any comes about. To begin with, this group should push the UNGA members to get a large majority vote to abolish the veto powers of the permanent Security Council members. Then give some teeth to the UN Peace Keeping force that has been a paper tiger for decades. In fact, it should become an enforcement arm of the UN - to ensure that resolutions passed by a clear majority of the UNGA and a 2/3 majority of the UNSC (with the veto power stripped away) are being carried out - by force if necessary.

That will only happen if we get another America hater like Barack Hussein Obama elected. Which I reckon is the entire Democrat party 55555

Yeah thats realistic LOL. Who is going to command this powerful military and man it? The Irish and Pakistanis? Where are they getting the heavy weapons? How about planes and choppers?

A permanent peacekeeping force under the United Nations would transform international crisis response from slow, improvised reaction into immediate, credible action—deploying rapidly with its own airlift, armoured mobility, secure communications, surveillance drones, engineering units, and field hospitals already in place, rather than waiting months for fragmented national contributions to assemble; standardised equipment and unified command would eliminate interoperability gaps, strengthen coordination, and improve accountability, while organic logistics and sustainment systems would keep forces operational in remote and volatile environments; equipped not for war but for presence, protection, and deterrence, such a force would act early, stabilise fragile situations before they spiral, and reinforce legitimacy through a visibly neutral, professionally prepared capability, making peacekeeping not an improvised response to crisis, but a standing global capacity to prevent it.

Of course, I dare say there will be some sozzled degenerate numbskull arguing from his barstool that the UN needs offensive weaponry, heavy weaponry. But these lickspittles lack the understanding about what peacekeeping means. It means keeping the peace, not creating the peace. Luckily, I haven't seen anyone post such a ridiculous request.

Canada forms anti-Trump alliance as nearly 40 countries unite

Those 40 Canadian allies are:

  • Core Participants (CPTPP): Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Chile, Mexico, Brunei, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the U.K..

  • Key Partners: The 27 members of the European Union, including major economies like Germany, France, Italy, and Spain.

  • Goal: The initiative aims to form a 1.5 billion-person trading bloc with shared "rules of origin" to allow seamless, low-tariff, or tariff-free trade, serving as a protective economic move against rising protectionist measures.

With another bloc being China, this is a knock-out blow to Trump's idiot fiscal machinations. He doesn't listen to economists, he just likes to sign dollar bills. He missed his chance taking the $100 bill. There's far more one dollar notes in circulation: "My names is on <400 billion?> dollars".
