Immigration police have arrested an Iranian national accused of being part of a gang that targeted foreign tourists at a Bangkok MRT station, using distraction techniques to steal wallets and cash. The suspect was taken into custody on 26 January 2026, with authorities saying the case has implications for tourist safety.

The arrest followed a complaint from a Chinese tourist who reported the theft at Huai Khwang Police Station. The victim said the incident occurred at around 18:00 on 25 January 2026 while waiting to board a train at MRT Rama 9 station. A man described as Middle Eastern approached him, made friendly conversation about travelling to China and asked to see Chinese yuan banknotes out of curiosity.

Believing the request to be harmless, the victim took out his wallet and showed the yuan. While continuing to talk and diverting attention, the suspect returned the banknotes, after which another man walked closely behind the victim. Moments later, the first suspect left the area, and the victim discovered his wallet was missing, containing Thai baht and Chinese yuan worth about 30,000 baht.

Police reviewed CCTV footage from the station, which showed two men working together. One suspect distracted the victim by asking to see the currency, while an accomplice removed the wallet before fleeing. Investigators gathered evidence and obtained an arrest warrant from the Criminal Court.

On 26 January, officers from Immigration Bureau Division 1, acting under senior commanders including Pol Lt Gen Phanumart Boonyalak, located and arrested the suspect, identified as Mr Gassan, an Iranian national. He was found at a condominium in central Bangkok.

Authorities said checks on his passport showed his permission to stay in Thailand had expired. He was charged with joint theft at night by two or more persons in a public place, specifically a railway station and with remaining in the kingdom after the end of his permitted stay. He was handed over to investigators at Huai Khwang Police Station for further legal proceedings.

Daily News reported that police said similar incidents had occurred multiple times, causing financial losses to tourists and damaging confidence in public safety. Immigration officers are continuing to expand the investigation to identify and apprehend other members of the alleged gang.
