The Department of Health (DoH) in Thailand will introduce a national standard for made-to-order drinks, titled "Normal Sweetness = 50% Sweetness," to reduce sugar consumption and combat non-communicable diseases. This new guideline seeks to halve the sugar content in "normal" drink orders. The official launch is set for February 11, following a consensus reached at a January 15 meeting.

This initiative is part of broader government efforts to address health concerns related to high sugar intake. The January meeting included representatives from both public and private sectors. Notable attendees were members from the Nutrition Division, Bangchak Retail Co, PTT Oil and Retail Business Public, CP All Public Co, Black Canyon (Thailand) Co, the Thai Coffee Association, and Intercoffee Corporation, along with various government agencies.

The policy does not mandate businesses to change beverage recipes but instead suggests a default sweetness level adjustment to 50%. Health officials hope this will gradually influence consumer habits towards healthier choices. Dr. Amporn Benjapolpitak emphasized cooperative efforts among businesses, civil society, and the government for lasting implementation.

Health authorities encourage consumers to try beverages with reduced sweetness, aiming to shift public preference over time. Dr. Saipin Chotivichien, Nutrition Division Director, appealed to businesses across the country to adopt this standard, promoting long-term health benefits. This initiative represents a step towards decreasing sugar-related health risks nationwide.

Looking forward, the DoH plans ongoing engagement with industry partners to ensure the consistent application of this standard and monitor its impacts on public health. Regular assessments and potential adjustments will be considered based on feedback and health outcomes, reported Bangkok Post.

Years ago, there was very little money to buy snacky stuff, now the farangy places and produce have set up shop, together with a bit more money in Thai pockets, it all changes.

I am sure us oldies remember growing up with near nothing, just waiting for Christmas to turn up for a few goodies...licklips
