Authorities in Nakhon Nayok province, Thailand, have intensified efforts to identify those responsible for burning agricultural waste that led to large-scale fires. These fires covered over 2,080 hectares of land, emitting significant smoke that has severely deteriorated air quality in nearby provinces, including the capital, Bangkok. Officials have been ordered to tackle this issue promptly.

The fires reportedly began as a method to clear land for the next crop cycle. However, they spread uncontrollably into community forests and rice fields. Hundreds of firefighters, volunteers, and military personnel contained the fires last night after a day-long battle.

An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the fires, with initial findings pointing to land preparation practices. The air quality in affected areas, such as Ongkharak district, saw PM2.5 pollution levels soar to 198 microns, well above the safe threshold of 37.5 microns. The thick smoke forced many residents to seal their homes to avoid inhaling the hazardous air.

Local police are determined to find and prosecute those responsible. They have revisited warnings against burning waste during the dry season, emphasizing environmental and health risks. Authorities are working closely with local communities to prevent future incidents.

Looking forward, stricter enforcement of environmental guidelines is expected. There may also be a push for alternative land preparation methods to avoid similar crises. Continued monitoring of air quality will remain a priority to protect public health, reported Thai PBS.

Key Takeaways

  • Fires from agricultural waste burning impacted over 2,080 hectares.

  • Air quality in Ongkharak hit unhealthy PM2.5 levels at 198 microns.

  • Legal action is underway against those responsible for the fires.
