The body of a six-year-old girl who was missing after being swept away by strong currents has been found in Kamphaeng Phet province, ending more than 60 hours of intensive search efforts. The discovery confirmed the child had drowned after entering the Ping River near a weir, plunging her family into grief as hopes of a rescue faded. Authorities recovered the body on 1 February 2026, about three kilometres from where she disappeared.

The incident began on 29 January when two young girls entered the water near the Liang Hin weir on the Ping River in Khlong Khlung district, Kamphaeng Phet. CCTV footage showed both children being pulled under by the current, while a man who had been fishing nearby jumped in and managed to save one child. The survivor was a five-year-old girl, while the second child, aged six, was swept away and could not be found at the time.

Search teams comprising local officials, village security volunteers and rescue workers continued daily operations along the river. Family members waited anxiously for news and reportedly sought spiritual guidance in hopes of locating the child. Despite extensive searches by boat along the riverbanks, no trace was found for more than two days.

At around 10.20am on 1 February 2026, Mr Ratchanon Sattayakam, village head of Moo 3 Ban Tha Phutthra, and village security volunteers were searching by boat when they located the body. The child was found floating face-up and caught in bamboo clumps along the riverbank in front of a eucalyptus plantation in Moo 6, Khlong Khlung subdistrict. The location was approximately three kilometres downstream from the point where she was last seen.

Rescue workers recovered the body and brought it ashore for examination by police and an on-duty doctor from Khlong Khlung Hospital. The examination found bite marks to the head and face consistent with animal activity and the left arm was missing, believed to have been eaten by animals. The body was in a state of decomposition and officials prepared it autopsy and then release to the family for religious rites.

Khoasod reported that local officials said the search had taken more than 60 hours and expressed condolences to the family. The child’s relatives were present during the recovery and were visibly distressed as the body was removed from the water.
