A 36-year-old man suffered severe burns when a cooking gas cylinder leak, exploded while he was frying rice at his home in Samut Prakan, causing damage to the property and affecting neighbouring premises. The blast brought down ceiling panels in three rooms of the house and left walls cracked by the force of the explosion. His partner and two young children escaped without serious injury.

The incident occurred at 7.35pm on 11 February 2026 at a house in Nakhon Thong Village, Soi Mangkon-Khanti, Phraeksa subdistrict, Mueang district, Samut Prakan. Praeksa municipal rescue workers responded after receiving a report from the Prakan emergency radio centre. At the scene, they found Mr Phumrach Heapkhunthot, 36, with burn injuries to his body and face, and he was given first aid before being taken to Samut Prakan Hospital.

Ms Mim, 21, his girlfriend, sustained minor injuries after ceiling panels fell on her. The explosion caused ceilings to collapse in three rooms: the children’s bedroom, the kitchen and the area outside the bathroom. Neighbouring houses also suffered cracked rear walls and damaged ceiling panels.

CCTV footage from outside the house captured the moment of the explosion, with a loud bang forcing the front door open. Screams from inside, including from young children, could be heard and a man was heard shouting that the gas had exploded. Family members were seen carrying the children out of the house to seek help from neighbours.

Mr Phumrach said, “At that time I was cooking, and suddenly there was an explosion. I’m not sure if it was a gas explosion, but I assume it may have been caused by gas.” Ms Mim said she was in another room with their children, aged two years and nine months, when she heard the blast and saw the ceiling fall, adding that there had been no warning signs.

A neighbour, Mr Suchart Koedtawee, 49, said that four days earlier there had been a smell of leaking gas, but no one had paid much attention. Authorities initially believe the cause may have been a damaged gas hose leaking without the homeowner’s knowledge. They have advised residents, particularly those with enclosed kitchens, to regularly check gas equipment and to close the cylinder valve, ventilate the area and call a specialist immediately if a gas leak is suspected.

Kaoded reported that investigations into the exact cause are ongoing as officials continue to assess the structural damage and safety of the affected properties.
