Cambodia’s three major mobile operators have activated nearly 1,500 5G antenna stations across Phnom Penh and provincial centres, marking a rapid expansion of next-generation connectivity just weeks after the official launch of services on 1 January.

According to the Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia, Smart Axiata, Metfone and Cellcard have each made significant progress in building coverage. Smart has switched on 674 stations in the capital and 17 provinces, while Metfone has deployed 531 across a wider spread including remote areas such as Ratanakiri and Stung Treng. Cellcard has added 289 sites, focusing on Phnom Penh and Kandal.

The rollout is designed to accelerate access to high-speed mobile internet and home broadband, supporting digital entertainment, enterprise solutions and the growing demand for bandwidth among businesses. Officials say the expansion will also underpin Cambodia’s ambitions to strengthen its digital economy.

While 5G is the headline, operators continue to extend 4G coverage to ensure reliable nationwide connectivity. The regulator has pledged to encourage collaboration between providers to build further infrastructure, while monitoring service quality to guarantee stable connections.

The deployment signals a major step in Cambodia’s digital transformation. With 5G now reaching beyond the capital into provincial hubs, the country is positioning itself to attract investment, support innovation and deliver faster, more efficient services to millions of users.
