Police in Cambodia’s Takeo province are hunting a man accused of brutally killing his sister and nephew during a family dispute.

The suspect, 35-year-old Pang Sobin, allegedly attacked his sister Pang Sokhom, 47, and her son Muong Sima, 22, at their home in Trav Em village on Tuesday night. According to police, the violence erupted after Sobin demanded money to buy drugs. When his sister refused and criticised his behaviour, he reportedly grabbed an axe and struck her repeatedly, killing her instantly.

Her son tried to intervene but was also fatally attacked, suffering blows to the head. After the killings, Sobin is said to have stolen two mobile phones before fleeing the scene on his motorbike.

Local police described the incident as a shocking act of domestic violence. “The suspect hacked his sister several times, killing her at the scene,” said Popel Commune Police Chief Major Ngeth Mean. “When her son tried to protect her, he too was attacked and killed.”

Takeo Provincial Police Deputy Chief Brig Gen Hin Sokheng confirmed that officers are working with neighbouring districts to track Sobin down. He remains at large, and authorities have urged the public to report any information that could lead to his arrest.

The case has sparked concern in the community, highlighting the dangers of drug-related disputes and the devastating impact of addiction on families. Police say they are determined to bring Sobin to justice and restore a sense of security to the area.

As the manhunt continues, residents of Trav Em village are left reeling from the loss of two lives in what should have been the safety of their own home.
