Iran faces civil unrest risk after Khamenei’s death

Iran is facing growing uncertainty following the reported death of its long-time leader, Ali Khamenei, with analysts warning the country could slide toward a breakdown of civil order if the government fails to adjust its strategy.

Two very different public reactions have emerged inside the country. In some areas, particularly at night, groups of Iranians reportedly celebrated the end of clerical rule and hoped the moment could signal a new era with less isolation from the West. During the day, however, large crowds gathered in cities including Tehran and Isfahan to mourn Khamenei and call for retaliation.

Despite the mixed public mood, Iran’s security apparatus appears intact. There have been no clear signs of division within the state’s powerful institutions, particularly the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which continues to hold significant influence over the country’s political and military direction.

The conflict has also taken a heavy toll on Iran’s leadership. Among those reported killed are senior officials including police intelligence chief Maj Gen Shahid Rezaian, armed forces chief Lt Gen Seyyed Abdolrahim Mousavi, IRGC commander Maj Gen Mohammad Pakpour, adviser Adm Ali Shamkhani, defence minister Lt Gen Nasirzadeh, and other top figures.

Meanwhile, tensions between Iran and Gulf states are escalating. Diplomatic figures such as Anwar Gargash have criticized Iranian attacks in the region, warning they risk further isolating the country. Analysts also noted that more missiles were reportedly fired toward Gulf states than Israel, raising questions about Tehran’s strategy.

Inside Iran, political uncertainty remains. Interim leadership figures including Gholamhossein Mohseni‑Ejei and Alireza Arafi have stepped in to maintain stability while the Assembly of Experts considers a successor.

Some observers believe the regime could select a hardline figure linked to the IRGC, reinforcing its existing anti-Western stance. However, if the conflict expands—especially if key economic routes like the Strait of Hormuz are disrupted—analysts warn Iranian society could face severe instability.

At the same time, diplomatic efforts led by regional players, including Turkey, are seeking ways to reduce tensions. Global leaders such as Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu have suggested a broader geopolitical shift may be underway, though the future direction of Iran remains uncertain.

Key Takeaways

  • Regional tensions are rising as Iran’s missile strikes and diplomatic disputes increase its isolation from Gulf states.

  • Analysts warn prolonged conflict or economic disruption could trigger a collapse in civil order within Iran.

Power vacuum, just like Venezuela. The honest demonstrators no longer have a voice because now there's no one to talk to.
