Thailand Offers Visa Amnesty for Stranded Foreign Nationals

Featured Replies

The Thai Immigration Bureau has introduced emergency measures to aid foreign nationals trapped in Thailand following the sudden closure of Middle East airspace. The recent hostilities in the region, escalating on 28 February 2026, led to a suspension of numerous international flight routes. As a result, major Middle Eastern aviation hubs have been inaccessible for four days, leaving tourists and business travelers stranded and unable to return home.

The directive provides special dispensations for those whose visas expired on or after 28 February 2026. One of the critical measures is the waiver of overstay fines for travelers at the airport who intend to leave the country. Without this waiver, the standard penalty in Thailand is 500 baht per day, a substantial cost for those facing indefinite delays.

For those unable to secure immediate flights, the Bureau is offering temporary extensions of stay. Officials may grant extensions for up to 30 days at a time, but those wishing to remain must first pay any accrued overstay fines. Required documentation includes a TM.7 form, passport copies, and a supporting letter from the embassy. If obtaining an embassy letter proves impossible due to the crisis, immigration officers will document a "statement of necessity" to process the extension.

The measures aim to address mounting congestion at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, where travelers await information about reopened routes or alternatives via Europe or East Asia. The Bureau emphasized that these steps are effective immediately and will continue until the Middle Eastern situation stabilizes or further notice is given, reported The Nation.

Such visa amnesties are not unusual for Thailand!

In past emergency situations, including severe flooding and the COVID-19 pandemic, Thai authorities similarly waived overstay penalties and extended visas for foreign visitors unable to leave due to circumstances beyond their control.

The policy is a force-majeure response to travel disruptions and aims to assist affected visitors until normal flight routes resume.

Seems Thailand is doing an excellent job, especially at the main airport, BKK, its giving out cash to stranded passengers and has set special welfare booths, on top of extending visas or no fines for overstaying passengers stuck there!

This is the same nonsense that they dragged out during Covid. Immigration can see perfectly well whether a foreigner was booked on a flight that was cancelled or postponed due to the ongoing hostilities - the person's embassy adds absolutely no additional information that Thai authorities don't already have.

Absolutely right. We had a letter from the British Embassy when Covid occurred. Cancelled flights resulted in a 3 day overstay. We booked the first flight available, turned up at Suva and guess what? A bht 1500 fine! Immigration couldn’t have given a toss about our letter or the prevailing circumstances. 2 days later a total amnesty was declared. I wrote a letter complying to the Thai Ambassador in London and surprisingly got no reply.

As a postscript, we never received the +£500 owed by Thai Air for the cancelled flight as they went into bankruptcy shortly afterwards.

The Overstay penalty seems to need a review, rework and logic applied. If hospitalized and under Doctors advice recommended to stay as in patient.

Why should any foreigner be penalized?

Exemptions should be included to allow for Overstay if the person can show through documents it was for reason outside of there control.

War, Airline Cancellations and Delays Not caused by late arrival or accepting another Airline provided route/option.

In Patient hospital care or delayed care beyond patients control. Theft of money or Passport when Police Report is filed.

Thai people are generally understanding, accepting that life happens but the Overstay is written like it's a criminal offense No matter what happens.

Such a shame. They could do a lot of money with overstay fines and enhance the country reputation for tourism !

They seem aware that the consulate letter is somewhat unrealistic?

They really love these letters from embassies. When you have a new passport issued by your embassy, you also need a letter from that same embassy stating that they issued you that new passport.

Your new passport might be a forgery, but if you are able to forge a passport, you are certainly able to forge a letter saying that your passport is not a forgery.

The guiding principle seems to be to make life unnecessarily difficult for folks.

This morning I told the waitress about the cash handouts for rich tourists. She gets 600 baht per day and wasn't impressed when I told her that the tourists are getting 2k per day.
