‘Smart-Bomb Trap’: Iran crisis could mean dangerous escalation

A leading security analyst has issued a stark warning: escalating strikes on Iran could push Donald Trump into a spiralling military gamble with consequences far beyond the battlefield.

International Security Affairs specialist Robert A. Pape says Washington risks falling into what he calls the “Smart-Bomb Trap” — the belief that precision air power can reshape a foreign regime without boots on the ground. History, he argues, shows the opposite.

Speaking to Intelligencer, Pape warned the dynamic is already unfolding — and could soon force the White House into decisions it never intended to make.

The Illusion of Perfect Warfare

Pape says modern military power has become almost too effective tactically. Precision bombs hit their targets. Leaders are killed. Infrastructure is cratered.

But the political outcome rarely follows.

“The problem isn’t that the bombs don’t work,” Pape said. “The problem is we’re a foreign power trying to pick a new government.”

He argues that nationalism — not firepower — determines whether regimes fall. When outside forces intervene, populations often rally around their leadership rather than abandon it.

Trump ‘Doubling Down’ as Pressure Builds

According to Pape, the latest rhetoric from Trump suggests the crisis may already be entering the next stage of escalation.

The analyst noted that the president has begun hinting that ground troops might not be off the table — a shift from earlier reliance on air power alone.

Bombing runs against sites such as the underground nuclear facility at Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant, he said, may destroy infrastructure but still fail to eliminate Iran’s nuclear capability.

Even after heavy strikes, the location of enriched uranium stockpiles could remain unknown.

A Nightmare Scenario: Escalation Beyond Control

Pape warned that Tehran could respond asymmetrically — potentially placing radioactive material into drone payloads targeting regional rivals such as Riyadh.

“That wouldn’t be strange,” he said. “It could happen tomorrow, or in 60 days. And it’s not up to Donald Trump.”

Such a move would widen the conflict dramatically and risk drawing more powers into a regional confrontation.

Regime Change Could Unleash a Nuclear Black Market

Even if Washington succeeded in collapsing the Iranian regime, Pape says the outcome might be worse: a failed state holding dangerous nuclear material.

Unlike the six million people in post-war Libya, Iran has roughly 92 million citizens and a far larger nuclear infrastructure.

In that chaos, enriched uranium could slip onto global black markets — creating a security threat far beyond anything seen after the Soviet collapse in Russia.

“The best-case scenario,” Pape warned, “could still be a disaster.”
