Phnom Penh has just wrapped up its biggest automotive showcase yet, with the Cambodia Auto Show 2026 drawing record participation and putting electric vehicles firmly in the spotlight.

Over three days, more than 60 firms filled 115 booths — a sharp rise from last year’s 87 — as global carmakers unveiled their latest models and technologies. The event, held from Friday to Sunday, attracted car enthusiasts, investors and policymakers, underscoring Cambodia’s fast‑growing role in the regional automotive industry.

Government officials were keen to highlight the transformation. Deputy Prime Minister Hun Many, who presided over the opening, noted how Cambodia has shifted from a market reliant on imports to one hosting major assembly plants for brands such as Toyota, Ford, Hyundai and BYD. Today, the country counts 10 active vehicle assembly facilities, a remarkable leap in just a few years.

Electric vehicles were the star attraction. Chinese manufacturers including BYD, Changan and GAC led the charge, joined by Japanese and American brands keen to showcase their latest EV lines. According to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, more than 9,000 EVs and over 3,000 electric motorcycles were registered between 2021 and 2025. The government has set ambitious targets: 40 per cent of vehicles and 70 per cent of motorbikes to be electric by 2050.

Samheng Bora, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Commerce, said the surge in participation reflects “the rapid growth of the automotive sector in Cambodia” and offers opportunities for both consumers and investors.

The numbers back up the optimism. Vehicle imports reached $1.1 billion in 2025, up 60 per cent on the previous year. With rising demand, expanding assembly capacity and strong government backing for green transport, Cambodia’s auto industry appears poised for a new era.

For car lovers, the show was a feast of innovation. For investors, it was a signal that Cambodia is no longer just a consumer market but an emerging hub for automotive production and electric mobility in Southeast Asia.
