A British woman who gained notoriety online as a “mum on the run” has been jailed for 26 months after admitting drug offences shortly after returning to the UK. Ellis Matthews, 35, was sentenced after pleading guilty to supplying cocaine and possessing cocaine and cannabis, following her deportation from Thailand. The case has drawn attention due to her social media claims about living abroad while allegedly receiving UK benefits.

She posted videos claiming she was receiving £2,300 a month in UK benefits while living overseas and shared tips on how others could do the same. Her online persona portrayed a “dream life”, often featuring bikini-clad videos that gained her significant attention.

During her time in Thailand, Matthews was detained for overstaying her visa and held in what she described as a “hell-hole” prison with rats and cockroaches. She spent 108 days in custody before being deported back to Britain in 2025 without her four-year-old son. Within weeks of returning to Lancashire, she was arrested in connection with drug offences.

At court, Matthews admitted the charges and was remanded to HMP Styal to begin serving her sentence. The 108 days she spent in a Thai jail will be counted towards her prison term. The 108 days in Thai custody is perplexing. Was she trying to fight extradition/deportation? Who paid for her flight?

No mention of who is caring for her 4yr old child. A family member perhaps? Would be interesting to know.

Also, why is the UK crediting her 108 days of custody in Thailand against her sentence in the UK? They are for different offences (visa overstay vs drugs charges in UK).

If i recall correctly from the previous story on this, the paternal grandmother was given custody.

Another classy visitor. It never ends. I never see any reports of Nobel prize winners visiting and offering to share knowledge. No visits from Fulbright scholars or noteworthy supporters of reforestation and preservation of mangroves etc. Just naked druggies, or belligerent drunks, or petty thieves or hardluck old age pensioners.

I have no knowledge of how a change of custody for a child works, but i would have thought it involves a massive amount of organisation and official paperwork.

I doubt the child had a passport, so Thai immigration would have needed this which would have been organised through the British embassy i presume.

The UK social services and other departments would have also been involved.

I guess it would be a long process to do this if all parties were in the UK, let alone with the mother in a Thai jail, child in Thailand, British mother etc.

The picture of the person looks scary, like excessive photo editing to hide a disfigurement, or just ugly.

Here's a bit of scrutiny, you stay in the nick in Thailand until you pay for your own passage home, so obviously hadn't got a pot to p×ss in. Ever thought her son may have been fathered by the local Somchai making him half Thai. And finally why should the 108 days spend in a Thai. nick be taken off her U.K. sentence 2 different offences 2 different countries

Why would the 108 days spent in detention in Thailand go towards her sentence in the UK if the sentence in the UK arises from separate drug offenses .

She was pregnant before she left the UK.... likely does not know who the father is !

This waste of oxygen cared for her son so much she got straight into drug dealing on her return. Good chance this just the start of an ongoing criminal career.

Indeed- she is a good example of all that is wrong in the UK- where the benefits system is openly abused- I am so glad I am out of there

Remember the source of this story as far as accuracy. I suspect there is more to the story as to why she was held for 108 days. Probably something to do with the drugs. remember she's a drug dealer. As far as what I read, it doesn't say anything about the kid one way or another. I never heard of anyone being deported without their child, and I doubt that Thailand wants to be burdened with such an issue. But born in Thailand means the kid is a citizen? Complicated.
