PM Secures Iran Deal for Oil Transit via Hormuz

Thailand has reached an agreement with Iran to allow Thai oil tankers to pass safely through the Strait of Hormuz, easing concerns over fuel shortages caused by ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul confirmed the development on 28 March 2026, stating the deal would help stabilise energy imports. The breakthrough follows disruptions earlier in March that raised fears over supply security.

International media, including ARY News and China Daily, reported that the agreement ensures safe passage for Thai vessels through the strategically vital waterway. Anutin said the arrangement would prevent a repeat of the disruptions seen at the beginning of March. He added that the government is adapting measures to minimise the impact of the global energy crisis on the public.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global shipping route, with data from the US Energy Information Administration indicating that more than 80 percent of crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passing through it are destined for Asia. The agreement is expected to reduce anxiety over potential supply interruptions amid heightened regional tensions. Thai authorities believe the deal will also accelerate the delivery of some oil shipments to the country.

The breakthrough follows diplomatic efforts by Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs after the Thai cargo vessel Mayuree Naree was attacked on 11 March while transiting the strait, leaving three crew members missing. The ministry clarified to Iranian authorities that Thai vessels were not involved in the conflict and sought assurances for safe navigation. Iran responded positively, requesting details of ships passing through the area.

Amarin reported that Anutin reiterated that the government is working urgently to strengthen national energy security as global pressures intensify. He emphasised that continued adjustments would be made to mitigate the impact on consumers. The agreement is seen as a key step in maintaining stable fuel supplies during a period of geopolitical uncertainty.

So anutin called and got confirmed thai tankers sre allowed to pass. So he secured the deal.

For $2,000000? Well, that's the way Thailand does it. As the Irishman with ten children said. "Be thankful for small murphies."

As an expat, with a diesel hungry pickup, sounds like good news. I'll wait and see.

Well, whatever was in the agreement, it's good news for Thailand that the ships will have safe passage. Aside from the oil, there are five ships with fertilizer consignments which Thai farmers would badly need.

One thing that sticks in the back of my head though, is Thailand's ongoing welcoming of US forces to Thailand to take paart in joint military exercises. There was one last week I think. I thought (just yesterday) that Iran warned any country allowing active US military personnel using its territory for that country to consider itself a legitimate target - whether or not they are involved in the fighting with Iran..

A deal with the devil!

Based on the reporting, the agreement simply guarantees safe passage for Thai‑flagged tankers through the Strait of Hormuz.

Nothing more specific has been disclosed.

Given that Iran has only asked Thailand to provide vessel details, it appears this is an administrative assurance rather than a large‑scale naval escort or protection deal.

There’s no information on how many ships are involved, how long the arrangement lasts, or whether it includes any binding security commitments.

In short, it’s a positive development, but the lack of operational detail means the real impact remains unclear, and yes, the devil will almost certainly be in the details once they emerge.

Sweet, if true......sadly it is not going to stop the price gouging......in fact it might make worse as traders panic to screw everyone over.......bottled water from our supplier today is up 25%.........why?......the cost of plastic???

Given the minimal margins so many traders extract in market competition the fuel cost component is immediate in impact. Traders are more likely to screw each other over in the attempt to remain viable.

In our locality there are three left from five water treatment distributors and similarly ice suppliers prior to the current fuel price hikes.

Rural deliveries by courier companies have slowed dramatically as they have had to attempt to cope not only with fuel costs but also with problems in obtaining fuel at all.

Certainly the cost of disposable components in consumer products will be passed on if the crude oil prices remain elevated.

In fact it would be interesting to discover just how much of the content in food is derived from petrochem.

Add clothing and plastics in industry, hospitals, automobiles. aeroplanes...........

Even at scale a small percentage in input costs can destroy viability even for major corporate organisations.

As always.... follow the money.

Weird that Anutin knows who to call in a country in war.

Yay!!!

Now I expect Trump to completely FUBAR the entire arrangement by putting troops on the ground and blowing up the entire regions.

Is Iran going to compensate the families of the 3 "missing" crew members of the Thai owned ship that was atttacked earlier? It just looks too much like Thailand is kissing up to Iran when Iran is going off the rails and nobody's friend.

They didn't mention the amount of funds that needed to be paid at the time, the extortion ransom.

How about you sharing your diplomatic brilliance with Kuwait, Bahrain, Iraq, UAE, KSA and Oman who are all being extorted by Iran. They do not want Iran to have nuclear weapons and they do not want Iran to have unfettered control over the region's maritime shipping lanes. You have no solution, no option to present to them other than to blame Trump and/or Israel. Arrogant and condescending westerners have ignored their plight for decades, only concerned about exploiting them for their oil and gas. It was the west that forced. KSA to pull out of Yemen. It was the west that has blocked the Gulf Arabs from defending themselves previously. Now it is the west's responsibility to contain the Iranians.
