I worked in the UK defence industry; UK MOD and US DoD did apply the screws on us. Not that much margin on US/UK sales. The money was made selling the same systems, or forms of, to other NATO members, or countries like Australia, Japan, India. Generally, they would buy whatever the British and Americans would buy.

The high costs of items was due to the contracts, particularly call-offs.
