Cracks in the Kremlin: Putin faces backlash as allies turn critical

Russia’s wartime consensus is beginning to fracture as pro-war commentators and establishment voices openly question the leadership of President Vladimir Putin.

A string of Ukrainian strikes on strategic infrastructure — combined with grinding battlefield losses — is fuelling frustration inside Russia’s nationalist camp. For a system built around projecting strength and control, the criticism marks a potentially dangerous shift.

War supporters lash out after fresh strikes

Anger erupted after Ukrainian drone and missile attacks hit key oil export facilities and military-linked industrial sites.

State-aligned war commentator Aleksandr Sladkov reacted furiously after one strike on a major terminal, blasting Russia’s response as ineffective. “We’ve been kicked in the balls again,” he said, voicing rare public frustration with the Kremlin’s handling of the conflict.

Such blunt criticism from loyalist voices — once a pillar of the war narrative — is increasingly difficult for Moscow to ignore.

Frontline losses fuel mounting pressure

The criticism comes as Russia’s battlefield momentum appears to stall.

Reports suggest casualty numbers are climbing sharply, with some estimates putting weekly losses in the thousands. While Russian forces still hold large swathes of territory, advances have slowed and Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russia have exposed vulnerabilities.

The war’s human and economic toll is becoming harder for even the Kremlin’s supporters to dismiss.

Pro-war analysts warn Russia is falling behind

Prominent pro-Kremlin blogger Yuriy Podolyaka warned that Ukraine is adapting faster than Russia on the battlefield.

“Our enemy is very serious — and very fast-learning,” he said, adding that Ukraine’s forces are improving more rapidly than Russia’s military structure.

That admission cuts directly against the Kremlin’s long-standing claim that time and resources favour Moscow.

Elite patience begins to fray

Behind the scenes, analysts say tensions inside Russia’s political class are growing.

Political commentator Maxim Kalashnikov claimed segments of the elite now view the country’s top leadership as a “toxic figure” rather than an asset. Some insiders, he suggested, increasingly want the war to end and Russia to stabilise its international position.

For Putin, whose authority has long rested on control and stability, the emergence of dissent from his own camp could signal a more volatile phase ahead.

Russia’s war in Ukraine may be facing growing internal doubt as prominent pro-war commentators warn the Kremlin that Ukraine’s expanding drone campaign is exposing dangerous vulnerabilities deep inside Russian territory.

According to analysts at the Institute for the Study of War, a wave of successful Ukrainian strikes on strategic infrastructure has triggered rare debate within Russia’s ultranationalist military circles about the need to end the war.

Drone War Reaches Russia’s Heartland

Ukrainian long-range drones have repeatedly struck targets far beyond the front lines, forcing Russia to confront a new battlefield reality.

The latest attacks have focused on key energy and transport hubs, including the Baltic export terminal at Ust-Luga Port in Leningrad Oblast. The facility — a critical gateway for Russian petroleum shipments — has reportedly been hit multiple times in recent days.

Fires erupted at the port after drone strikes, underscoring how infrastructure once considered secure is now within reach of Ukrainian weapons.

Pro-War Voices Warn of Strategic Weakness

The growing reach of Ukrainian strikes is rattling even Russia’s most hard-line supporters of the war.

Influential ultranationalist commentators now acknowledge that Ukraine’s expanding drone arsenal is creating a serious threat to Russian infrastructure. Some have bluntly argued that the West’s economic power dwarfs Russia’s capacity to sustain a long technological arms race.

One commentator warned that Moscow cannot produce interceptor missiles fast enough to counter the expanding drone threat — leaving the country “doomed to defeat” unless the war is brought to an end.

Battlefield Reality Begins to Bite

Russian military bloggers, often closely watched as a barometer of sentiment among pro-war circles, are also admitting that Ukraine has gained momentum on parts of the front line.

Several have complained that Russian forces are struggling to adapt to rapidly evolving drone warfare. Ukrainian interceptor drones in particular have been praised by critics who say Russia’s military leadership has been slow to respond.

The result, according to some voices inside the pro-war camp, is a battlefield dynamic that could prevent Russia from regaining the initiative in 2026.

Pressure Mounts on the Kremlin

These rare public doubts highlight a widening gap between battlefield expectations and reality.

For the Kremlin, the stakes are increasingly stark: continue a costly war while infrastructure burns at home, or confront the growing calls — even from nationalist supporters — to find a way out.
