Salt farmers in the coastal communes of Ho Chi Minh City are witnessing a resurgence in their industry due to steady demand, improved production techniques, and community-based tourism efforts. These developments are revitalizing an age-old craft, bringing increased activity to the salt fields. Reduced stockpiles compared to previous years have further bolstered the positive outlook among the farmers.

Salt farming has been a staple of An Thới Đông Commune since the late 1960s, evolving from simple collection methods to more advanced crystallisation fields by 1977. Recent investments in storage facilities and the adoption of tarp-lined crystallisation methods have significantly improved efficiency and quality. The city's People’s Committee officially recognized An Thới Đông as a traditional salt-making village in October 2024, aiming to preserve cultural heritage while promoting economic development.

Thiềng Liềng island hamlet in Thạnh An Commune is also prominent in salt production, surrounded by vast mangrove forests. Initiated in the 1970s, the area now boasts approximately 400ha of salt farms. Despite challenges like labor intensity and fluctuating weather, the introduction of community-based tourism has opened new avenues for local residents. Farmers have diversified their offerings, adding unique flavors like shrimp and herbs, many of which have received three-star OCOP certification. This diversification has helped boost both income and exposure through tourism.

Nguyễn Thị Bạch Tuyết, leading the local agricultural cooperative, highlights that tourism has become a vital avenue for income by blending visits with traditional salt-making experiences. The island has received thousands of visitors, with many households engaging in both tourism and salt production, providing a sustainable livelihood for residents while preserving their heritage. This synergy between tourism and traditional crafts continues to draw attention to the region.
