UK Refuses To Join Trump’s Hormuz Blockade Gamble

Trump Starme 2r.jpg

United Kingdom will not take part in Donald Trump’s escalating military blockade of Iran, drawing a clear line between London and Washington as tensions spike in the Gulf.

Despite US claims of allied support, British forces will not be used to seal off Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most critical energy arteries.

No War Role — But Presence Remains

The UK is stopping short of direct confrontation.

Instead, British assets will:

  • Continue mine-clearing operations

  • Maintain anti-drone defences

  • Support maritime security in the region

But crucially — no participation in the blockade itself.

Starmer Pushes De-Escalation

Keir Starmer has doubled down on calls for restraint, warning against further escalation after US-Iran talks collapsed.

London’s position is clear:

  • Reopen the strait

  • Protect global trade

  • Avoid widening the conflict

Officials stressed that “freedom of navigation” — not confrontation — remains the priority.

Trump Claims Allies — But Stands Largely Alone

Trump insists partners will join the operation, even suggesting NATO backing.

But the reality looks very different.

While NATO members may assist with maritime security, there is no broad coalition backing a full US blockade.

The UK’s refusal is the clearest signal yet that allies are wary of being dragged deeper into the بحران.

Oil Shock And Global Stakes

The stakes couldn’t be higher.

Roughly:

  • 20% of global oil and LNG flows through Hormuz

  • Prices have already surged past $100 a barrel

  • Economies worldwide are feeling the strain

Even limited disruption risks triggering a full-blown energy crisis.

A Growing Transatlantic Divide

Behind the scenes, Britain is working with European partners — including France — to form a wider coalition focused on keeping shipping lanes open, not closing them.

It marks a subtle but significant split:

  • US strategy: Pressure Iran through blockade

  • UK strategy: Stabilise markets and avoid escalation

A Dangerous Moment

With Iran already restricting traffic and the US preparing to tighten the screws, the risk of miscalculation is rising fast.

The UK’s message is cautious but unmistakable:
this is a crisis to contain — not inflame.

Whether Washington listens is another question entirely.

This is a wise move on the part of the UK. What Trump is doing is beyond reckless, and smart people don't do reckless.

UK, come and join us in some War crimes , it will be fun ...

They are already fully 'joined in' but don't dare admit it.

This may turn out to be the United States' Suez Crisis, where a war-impoverished Britain failed militarily because of economic cost; compounded by U.S. opposition to an IMF loan to which the U.K. was entitled.

[I still remember looking across the Common and seeing a huge convoy of sand-coloured military vehicles moving slowly southward down the A5 towards London; there were no motorways in those days]

The present war is costing the U.S. dearly at a moment they can ill afford it; and foreign countries are wisely refusing to loan the U.S. the money it needs - I refrain from adding "to balance its books".

Note that to defend Eqyptian sovereignty, Nasser severely reduced his country's GDP for some years ahead by scuttling ships in the Canal, blocking it. Any self-respecting nation will accept sacrifices to preserve its sovereignty.
