Boy, 9, found in van after 500 days: left unable to walk

A nine-year-old boy has been rescued after spending nearly 18 months locked inside his father’s van, in a case that has shocked authorities in eastern France. Found in a village near the borders with Switzerland and Germany, the child was discovered severely weakened, unable to walk, and surrounded by filth.

He is now in hospital as prosecutors piece together how the abuse went undetected for so long.

Discovery Triggered by a Single Sound

The case broke open when a neighbour reported hearing “sounds of a child” coming from the parked van in Hagenbach. Police forced entry and found the boy lying naked in a foetal position, covered by a blanket atop rubbish and near excrement.

Prosecutor Nicolas Heitz said the child had been confined in a seated position for so long he has lost the ability to walk. He had reportedly not washed since 2024.

Father Claims ‘Protection’ — Authorities Reject Narrative

The boy’s father, now in custody, told investigators he confined his son to “protect him” from being placed in psychiatric care. Officials say there is no evidence the child had any such medical needs, with school records indicating normal performance.

The boy told investigators he struggled with his father’s partner and believed he had “no choice” but to accept the confinement.

Family Silence and System Failure

The father’s partner denies knowing the child was inside the van. She has been released under judicial supervision, facing charges for failing to assist a minor in danger.

Friends and relatives reportedly believed the boy had been transferred to another school or placed in care. Authorities are now investigating whether others knew — or chose not to act.

Wider Safeguarding Questions Emerge

Two other children from the household have been taken into care as the inquiry widens. The case is raising urgent questions about gaps in monitoring, school follow-up and community vigilance.

For now, the focus remains on the boy’s recovery — and on how a child could disappear in plain sight for 500 days without intervention.
