A banh mi shop owner in Vung Tau, Ho Chi Minh City, has been fined VND32 million (US$1,214) following a food poisoning incident that hospitalized 108 people. The fine was imposed for operating without a valid food safety certificate, as per the Vung Tau Ward People's Committee's decision.

Le Nguyen Thi Bang Tuyen, the shop owner, and her staff lacked necessary food safety training certificates. In Vietnam, compliance with these certifications is crucial to ensure proper hygiene standards and prevent foodborne illnesses. Consequently, the shop has been closed for three months.

This shop, located at Do Chieu and Ly Thuong Kiet streets, is popular among locals. Recently, operations moved to 13 Do Chieu Street, where ingredients like pâté and sauces were prepared off-site before sale. After March 2, patrons experienced symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting, following banh mi consumption.

Lab tests revealed 28 out of 51 food samples contained Salmonella, known for causing gastroenteritis. Salmonella, along with E. coli, frequently leads to food contamination, with symptoms including fever and abdominal pain. Recent outbreaks in the region have been linked to similar bacterial infections from banh mi.

Experts stress the necessity of strict adherence to food safety regulations to prevent such incidents. This case highlights the importance of proper hygiene and compliance to safeguard public health. Authorities continue to monitor food vendors to enforce safety measures.

The shop's suspension aims to address lapses and prevent future occurrences. Looking forward, increased surveillance and awareness programs are expected to enhance food safety standards in the area.

Surprising, because when one sees how some street food stalls are storing their uncooked ingredients...any open air food stand can be a health hazard in Thailand.
