US Expands Iran Blockade beyond Hormuz Into A Global Maritime Crackdown

Naval Campaign Goes Worldwide

The United States has widened its crackdown on Iranian shipping far beyond the Strait of Hormuz, with Gen. Dan Caine confirming forces can now target Tehran-linked vessels across the globe — including in the Pacific. Ships that slipped out before the blockade are also in scope.

Broad Powers To Intercept

U.S. forces are authorised to stop, board and seize vessels suspected of supporting Iran, regardless of location outside neutral waters. The move marks a major escalation, effectively turning a regional blockade into a global interdiction campaign.

Expansive ‘Contraband’ List

The Pentagon has issued a sweeping list of prohibited goods. Weapons and military gear are classed as “absolute contraband,” while oil, metals and even electronics fall under “conditional contraband” if deemed usable for military purposes.

Rising Pressure On Tehran

More than 10,000 U.S. troops are enforcing the operation, warning ships they could face boarding or force if they resist. The expansion piles fresh economic and military pressure on Iran as a fragile ceasefire edges toward expiry and talks to extend it intensify

I guess the legality or otherwise of this is secondary to how the insurance markets and shipping companies react, although they are probably sailing uninsured.
