Iran’s power shift: IRGC tightens grip after leadership killings,

Iran’s political order has been dramatically reshaped after a wave of US-Israeli strikes eliminated key figures, clearing the path for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to consolidate control. What remains of the civilian and clerical leadership has been pushed to the margins, as security officials take charge of both war strategy and diplomacy.

The result is a more centralised, more opaque — and potentially more dangerous — Iran.

Leadership Vacuum — And a New Strongman Emerges

Following the deaths of senior figures including Ali Khamenei, power has shifted rapidly. His successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, is reportedly injured and largely absent from day-to-day control.

Into that vacuum has stepped Ahmad Vahidi, now the central figure directing both military operations and negotiation strategy. His rise marks a decisive turn toward hard-line governance.

Civilian Authority Side-lined as Security State Expands

Iran’s traditional balance — between clerical authority and elected institutions — has fractured. Decision-making now sits firmly within IRGC-aligned networks, particularly the Supreme National Security Council.

Moderate voices have been squeezed out, replaced by figures prioritising security dominance over political compromise. The shift signals a long-term restructuring of the state itself.

From Symbolic Retaliation to Direct Escalation

Under Vahidi’s leadership, Iran’s posture has hardened. Analysts say the strategy has moved beyond calibrated, symbolic responses toward direct, potentially disproportionate retaliation.

Key red lines remain non-negotiable: uranium enrichment, missile capabilities, and regional proxy networks. The message is clear — concessions under pressure are off the table.

Diplomacy Narrows as Conflict Risk Climbs

This consolidation of power is already constraining diplomatic options. Talks with the US face increasingly rigid conditions, with little room for de-escalation.

At the same time, Iran’s leadership is signalling readiness to match or exceed US actions, raising the prospects of rapid escalation across the region.

Secrecy, Control — And a More Volatile Future

Behind closed doors, a tight inner circle now controls communication and strategy, limiting visibility even for insiders. Public messaging may shift, but analysts caution this reflects tactical signalling rather than division.

For ordinary Iranians, the impact is stark: economic strain, political repression and the growing risk of prolonged conflict. With power concentrated and tensions rising, the path ahead looks increasingly unstable — and harder to reverse.
