In the market for a car replacement

Featured Replies

As the title says I'm in the market for a new/second hand pick up, and it will be a Nissan Navara, as I'm very please with my current 16 year old Navara.

So please keep the discussion on topic, and don't suggest another brand or model, or don't try to encourage me that Nissan isn't good.

First option is a new Navara Calibre double cab Pro-2 7AT which will cost me 875.000 baht after discounts and turn in my 16 year old car, and on top I get 1 year first class insurance (worth 25.000 baht). It has 3 year or 100.000km warranty

Second option is a 2022 Navara calibre double cab V 7AT, with 73.000 km on the clock, with complete service history, and in as new condition.
It has all the options the new car has, except it has 17" wheels instead of 18".
It will set me back 520.000 baht and I also have to turn in my old car. Likewise, it does include transfer fees, 1 year tax registration and government insurance, but no all risk insurance.
Comes with 1 year or 10.000km warranty

With these details, which one would you go for, and why?

Thanks

I think you’re very brave buying a Nissan.

First of all, I already said don't try to encourage me that Nissan isn't good.
So why would i need to be brave?

You think Nissan goes bankrupt, and if so, they will take away my car?, or i can't start it any more?

I think there is a significant possibility Nissan will go bankrupt or at least go the way of Chevrolet in Thailand.

Chevrolet warranty is still honoured I thought, so I would assume that would also be the case with Nissan, if it goes bankrupt.
Anyway, it would not affect the second hand option, and my current navara with more than 250.000 clicks has been problem free.

So please keep the discussion on topic, which is, which of both options would you choose, without taking a possible bankruptcy into account.

Just base the opinion on what i get for the price.

Getting parts for Chevrolet is problematic, it took 5 months to get an air conditioning part on my friends Trailblazer.

What is the old unit worth?

I think in 2026 the Navara is a whole new platform.

Is the new unit on the new platform, or on the same platform as the 2022?

What am I missing? this is on the Nissan website

The new one looks to be the better option to me. You never know how the second hand one has been treated, and the change in wheel size suggests it may have had other modifications. Also, while 75k is not a lot of Km's for a diesel, it's still 75k km on wheel bearings, water pumps, AC compressors etc

I think the Nissan trucks and SUV's have the best ride in their class, and the newest ones have excellent safety features, and the new one will likely be better in the long run. It could be years before the new one hits 75k Kms.

I don't understand what you mean with that question.

The 2022 car looks in and outside exactly same as the new car.

The Calibre V was discontinued in 2022 and replaced by the Calibre E and the Calibre pro-2 and pro-4

I see youtubes of an all new navara, but haven't see it in a showroom yet

The second hand one comes with complete service history done by Nissan.

I compared the options and safety futures, and they are the same as the Pro-2.

Agree it has been used, but at the end of the day it is 355.000 baht difference, deduct the all risk insurance from that, and it's still 330.000 baht

Then the new car is on the old platform, and an all-new model will be here soon, ergo the blowout prices.

Looks like you keep your cars a long time, so I still think go new. Plastic components and electronics can degrade with age, especially in the heat. But sounds like you're leaning towards the used one, and yes it's a significant saving, but I wouldn't be swapping one used car for another, I'd prefer new myself, and maintain it well from new.

There are no blow out prices as far as I understand. The new price is 1.045.000 baht and I get 80.000 baht discount and 90.000 for my old car.

The new unit has a bumper to bumper 3 year,100,000km warranty, and choice of colors.

If you love the second hand, go for it.

Yes I'm leaning to the second hand one, especially because of the savings, and that it has all the options of the top model.

Usually i don't keep my cars that long, as I've always been a car enthusiast, with many fancy cars. But I liked the current Navara and, and since it has been trouble free for 16 years/250.000 km combined with the road conditions in Thailand, I considered it a waste of money to replace it.

I wouldn't even replace it today, but I had a little accident about a year ago, and couldn't be bothered to spend 15K on the bodywork.

So when I saw this car, I though, why not replace it.

I'm also 68 years old, so a new car will most likely outlive me.

If your intention no matter which is to keep it forever and not change it, buy the 2nd hand one, its already devalued and enjoy the cash saving, the new one will devalue faster and soon catch the other one, you'd have paid extra 300k for nothing.

Indeed, I think this will be my last car.

When I lived in Europe I always had fancy cars, and changed frequently. In Thailand I learned quickly that a car is something to move yourself from point A to point B.

So yes I am of the same opinion as you, and the is that new car will be 100.000 baht less worth than I paid for it, the moment I drive it out of the dealership.

My only concern is if the 300K discount for a 4 year old car in as new condition, is the right value, or should it be cheaper.

If you buy the new one, you’re effectively paying an extra ~350k upfront to enjoy “brand new”, a longer warranty, and zero unknowns - but financially you’ll carry the steepest part of the depreciation curve, losing roughly double what the used one will over the same period.

The 2022 option, on the other hand, sits right in the sweet spot: same core truck, same real-world performance, but with the heavy depreciation already absorbed by the first owner. You still lose value, of course, but at a much slower, more controlled rate.

So.... the value proposition is clear:

  • New = peace of mind + pride of ownership (but you pay for it)

  • Used = significantly better financial efficiency with minimal real compromise

Given your situation - already happy keeping a Navara for 10+ years - the used one isn’t just the cheaper option… it’s the smarter allocation of money.

The new truck gives you lower maintenance early, full warranty, and zero unknowns - but you’ll burn ~550k+ in depreciation plus ~350k–500k in upkeep over 10 years.

The 2022 used truck costs far less upfront, skips the worst depreciation, and even with slightly higher maintenance ~450k–650k, your total spend is still significantly lower - meaning you end up in almost the same place after 10 years, but with ~200k–300k more cash still in your pocket.

(cost of maintenance figures very rough estimates from AI)

The 18" wheels will give you a better ride - and so will the extra ~200k–300k cash in your pocket.
