Help a farang collapsed in the street

A young, handsome, strong, well-dressed guy collapsed in front of a clinic in our neighbourhood. The nurses brought him inside (even it was after clinic hours), took blood pressure and temperature (he was shivering), gave him first water, then a soda and some slices of pizza (he was hungry).

I helped to communicate (he couldn't speak Thai), it turned out, no phone, no hotel, slept in the street (he didn't look like that), no friends. His passport showed 1 month overstay (visa-exempt entry).

I called his embassy, useless, he was on file there already.

The nurses were reluctant to call an ambulance (he was getting better, able to walk and talk - a bit - again), they called the police because he needed to stay somewhere, which didn't come for a long time.

So we brought him into the hotel across the street, I paid one night incl. breakfast, and I called his mother overseas (the only number he knew). Told him to contact embassy and mother again tomorrow morning. (Nobody bothered to look for his visa stamp)

What else could we have done?

(The consular staff kept saying he should go to a "shelter". Funny idea.)

Good on you for being willing to help this fellow. There's probably not much more you could have done in this situation.

This guy really needs to leave the country ASAP. Best thing would be for family or friends to buy a ticket for him and transfer funds to cover the overstay fine. Hopefully he gets to the airport and gets out before Immigration becomes aware of him. Should that happen, leaving Thailand will become more difficult and more expensive.

Well, if you like him and have a spare bedroom there are options.

100% this on both points.

Props to you OP for being prepared to help out like this - used your time to translate, get a room and contact the lads family (mother).

You went far beyond what many would have done.

Second point: That course of action is by far the most suitable - family get him a ticket (and work out how to transfer the overstay fine) - get him on a flight home - thats the best case scenario. Worst case is he's stuck in IDC for months.

How helpful did his family sound @Hish ? - grateful - had he been out of communication with them for a while etc ? or did they respond as if this behavior is not unexpected ?...

Could have been a mental health issue - its not really the Consulate / Embassies fault, and they're not there to help 'bums' but - they didn't check - its pretty disgusting the level of disregard consular and embassy staff show early on in these situations - when resolutions could be found quite quickly with trusted contacts with family members etc - though I suppose their hands are tied by beurocratic restrictions - you [Op] helped already far more than they realistically can.

What else could have been done - not much without a great deal more effort on your part.

Liaise with the mother - get her to purchase a ticket - send you the equivalent of 20,000 Baht over-stay fine.

Send him to the airport for his flight - check him in, and see him off at the security counter - handing him his 20,000 baht fine there and then - that would be an extremely generous act - and there is no suggestion that you 'should' have done that.

There is 'also the risk of no good deed goes unpunished' - mother accusing you of trying to scam her when suggesting she sends the equivalent of 20,000 baht for the overstay time - its potentially a very delicate situation - I'd say you already did far more than enough.

Unfortunately, she didn't sound very interested.

Your points are correct, but at the time the overstay wasn't our biggest concern. I did realize calling the police would land him in IDC, and I got hjm checked into the hotel by showing them his passport as a picture in my phone, so they wouldn't scroll through the pages (the overstay was very obvious).

Our biggest concern was the immediate health situation, in the beginning he could not walk and hardly talk. That was getting better. He probably really needed aircon, a bed and a breakfast.

I will remember your points for the next time. There is a British beggar in my neighborhood, I don't hope these things will become frequent.
