Hegseth Clashes With Lawmakers In Fiery Six-Hour Iran War Hearing

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth faced an intense and often combative grilling on Capitol Hill as lawmakers clashed over the cost, conduct and purpose of the ongoing war with Iran.

Appearing before the House Armed Services Committee for the first time under oath since the conflict began, Hegseth spent nearly six hours defending the administration’s strategy alongside Dan Caine and Pentagon finance chief Jules Hurst.

War Of Words Erupts Over Cost And Strategy

From the outset, Hegseth adopted a confrontational tone, declaring that the “biggest adversary” facing the United States was not Iran — but what he called the “defeatist rhetoric” of critics at home.

Democrats fired back, accusing the administration of dragging the country into an expensive and unnecessary conflict. The hearing revealed that the war has already cost an estimated $25 billion, with much of the spending directed toward munitions and replacing lost equipment.

Lawmakers warned that the true cost could rise significantly as operations continue, particularly given the strain on global supply chains and military readiness.

“War Of Choice” Accusations Dominate

Several Democrats repeatedly described the conflict as a “war of choice,” arguing it had been launched without proper congressional approval.

California Congressman John Garamendi delivered one of the sharpest attacks, accusing both Hegseth and President Donald Trump of misleading the public.

Hegseth hit back forcefully, calling the remarks “reckless” and accusing critics of allowing political hostility toward Trump to cloud their judgment.

At one heated moment, he snapped “shame on you” at a lawmaker, underlining just how tense the exchanges had become.

Republicans Rally Behind Iran Threat Narrative

While Democrats pressed on legality and cost, Republicans largely lined up behind the administration’s position.

Florida Congressman Carlos Gimenez argued that Iran represents a long-standing existential threat, pointing to decades of hostile rhetoric from Tehran.

Supporters of the war also framed the conflict as necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons — a central justification repeatedly cited by the administration.

Civilian Casualties Cast Shadow Over Hearing

The hearing was further overshadowed by questions surrounding a controversial airstrike in the Iranian city of Minab.

According to Iranian officials, the strike killed 168 people, including around 110 children. US investigators have suggested American forces may have been responsible, though a final determination has not yet been made.

Senior Democrat Adam Smith criticised the administration’s handling of the incident, arguing that delays in acknowledging the strike risked damaging US credibility.

Hegseth said the case remains under investigation and declined to assign a financial or operational cost to the incident.

Defence Budget Surge Sparks Alarm

Running parallel to the war debate was a major funding request from the White House, which is seeking to raise the US defence budget to $1.5 trillion — a level not seen since the peak of World War II.

Hegseth described the proposal as reflecting “the urgency of the moment,” while Gen Caine called it a “historic down payment” on future security.

Critics, however, warned that such a dramatic increase risks locking the US into prolonged military commitments at a time of growing economic pressure.

Ceasefire Fragile As Political Battle Intensifies

Although a ceasefire between the US and Iran remains in place, officials acknowledged that the conflict is far from resolved.

The hearing made clear that the war is now being fought on two fronts — overseas and in Washington — with deep divisions over its purpose, cost and long-term consequences.

Hegseth is expected to face another round of questioning in the Senate, where the administration’s handling of the war is likely to come under even greater scrutiny.

Dropping $25 billions' worth of bombs on the turbans' then dropping F/A but hot air resulting in $120 barrel oil is the strategy.

Blockade the strait until the world economy collapses and declare victory the way forward by the looks' impeach these idiot's they are mental 🤔

what the heck is wrong with this moron, lack of education, no answering the questions, wonder what he's hiding, we all know he and his master have no plan whatsoever, but again MAGA strategy is divert and deny everything, I do thin he couldn't answer correctly because the jacket is too tight

But today, poor old Pete had to testify in Congress before the experts on the House Armed Services Committee. It’s a place where questions aren’t just allowed, but also follow-up questions.

And this is where he completely unraveled. Because follow-up questions really are Pete Hegseth’s kryptonite.

Pete Hegseth lost his cool in front of Congress. It was a dramatic unraveling

2024: Trump meets US oil executives, asks for ~$1B in campaign support, signals quid pro quo pro-fossil fuel policies.

2026: Meets them again at the White House as the Iran war disrupts global oil supply.

Now connect the dots....
A prolonged blockade -- reduced supply with higher oil prices and bigger profits for US producers.

Maybe it’s just geopolitics. Or is Trump the real swamp?

I've noticed something during this comedy/tragedy of a wannabe king's final (we hope) term. Titles like these used to generate a MOUNTAIN of MAGA backlash and then useless arguments dripping with acrimony from both sides.

We're exhausted of the whole damned thing. People with working brains see the damage that's been done. It's not irreparable but our children's children will still suffer from this idiocy. Families have been torn apart, friendships destroyed, the richest man in the world killed some of the poorest children (per Bill Gates) - roughly 750 million children have died due to suspension of USAID.

Now the Republicans are resorting to blatant cheating in the upcoming mid term elections. The only thing we can do is hunker down, wait this out, and vote whenever possible. Coming to this understanding doesn't make it any more palatable.

Heavy sigh . . .
