Fresh Wise announcement

Featured Replies

I have a Wise account registered to a Thai address, but also kept a bank account in my home country, and I have Revolut and N26 with an address in my home country in case <deleted> hits the fan. Obviously, I will be moving any funds out of the Wise account to avoid any tax implications.

In case any miss this ... that Wise article makes it clear: i.e. it is not fully relevant to any expat whose registered Wise address is not a Thai address.

Thses change's shouldn't affect you. Only Wise accounts with a Thai registered address.

My understanding is N26 uses Wise for international transfers. N26 also requires one to have a proven EU address, and I thought, also requires EU residency in addition to an EU address, ... although I suspect once one has an N26 account it is difficult for N26 to discover one's residency has changed.

Happily I don'T have a wise account, as it never could if you lived in Thailand. I only use wise to get my euro's to come to Thailand. However i am so disappointed by the lies they told me about several transfers, that i hardly use them anymore. If they will ask for copies of visa and or passport i will delete them. Be careful what information you give. In Thai news nothing has ever mentioned that Wise has a banklicence.

Wise Thailand won't have a banking license as it isn't going to operate as a bank. It will have the following five licenses:

Regulatory Licenses

Wise is the first non-bank in Thailand to hold this particular combination of licenses, which include:

  • Electronic Money Service License

  • Electronic Fund Transfer Service License

  • Authorised Money Transfer Agent License

  • Authorised Electronic Money Business Operator License (specifically an FX e-money license)

  • Foreign Business License

A bank is usually defined as a financial institution that accepts deposits and makes loans. Perhaps Wise accepts deposits, but I don't think Wise will be making loans, thus it does not fit the typical definition of a bank and therefore may not require or qualify for a banking license.

Why not keep the money in your UK bank account? Then wait until the exchange rate is favourable, and do the transfer to wise.

Thanks, that is exactly what I do, keep GBPs until, like yesterday, the rate goes up.

As I said in an earlier reply, last week I did my usualy monthly transfer 'For Long Term Stay in Thailand' which was followed by a box asking if I needed an FET proof paper. This month's arrived as usual over the weekend, so the next one must be in June, so time to investigate other methods.
