Google Pixel Phones in Thailand

Featured Replies

I was planning on having a friend bring me a new Pixel 10 from the US when he visits in June.

I just read on a Reddit forum that many of the Pixel's features are region locked. The OP took his US purchased Pixel to Turkey and he found many of his features didn't work well or some not at all.

Does anybody here in Thailand use a US sourced Pixel phone? Does it work as it should or are there features you can't access?

I'd hate to pay for a Pixel, then not be able to fully make use of it. I would be especially concerned about banking apps.

Can a Xiaomi run GrapheneOS ?

can the bootloader be unlocked so as to run any sort of alternative OS without all the bloat and spyware ?

Sure if you want your warranty voided then install a custom firmware, which all have more bugs than the original one.

Bloat and spyware can be removed with ADB without voiding waranty

If it worked fine they would be widely available on Shopee or Lazada. The lack of listings indicates to me, they don't work as expected,.

Does he care about any of that? i doubt it

There are things that can't be removed with ADB without root privilege.

I doubt it too but was just asking 😋 (for a friend)

Name me some of those "things", I'm all ears

For your eyes (ears) only

https://macmyths.com/how-to-uninstall-any-android-app-with-adb-including-system-apps-and-bloatware/

What Happens When You “Uninstall” System Apps with ADB

ADB cannot truly delete system apps on a non-rooted device. The system partitions are mounted read-only, and Android enforces this at both the kernel and security policy level.

Instead, ADB performs a per-user uninstall. The app remains on disk, but it is removed from your user profile, cannot run, cannot update, and disappears from the launcher. From the user’s perspective, it looks uninstalled, but the system still retains the original APK.

Oh yeah I remember you now. You are the one who couldn't understand why bank apps didn't run on Android 5, so I better close this case.

For your eyes (ears) only, bloat or spyware aren't system apps

Yes - but used to be 168 hours to unlock and very restrictive in how that was done.

That was 5 years ago and doubt it has improved.

Xiaomi phones used to have so much <deleted> on them I only stood it for 3 months after buying (Android 9), and after deleting what I could, rooted it.

Still using now with Android 15.

Depends on your perspective I guess.....

MI security suite as was - was a system app and arguably both bloat and spyware.

I understand perfectly why banking apps don't run on older phones

its because the phone manufactures are unwilling to do the "hard" work releasing updates for

their products ..in other words forced obsolescence.

And the banking app makers making ever bloated apps that require ever more ram and higher powered CPU's.

Bloat and spyware installed at the factory is often impossible to remove without root permissions they make it that way for a reason.

Yes, some features are region locked. Have your friend do the initial set up in the US if those features are important to you. Remember that the XL Pro does not have a physical sim slot as sold in the US, no idea if the others versions do or not. So, if that is important to you, get the Canadian version from Thai Nexus Man or one of the other sellers on Lazada. Whoever said there are no sellers on Lazada is as clueless as the comments about Graphene and have no idea what it is.

Had a pixel. worked perfect in Thailand until the battery blow up.

Asked Google for help. Answer: they not serve me in Thailand. After I complaint they told me:

You not going to tell us where we provide service! My answer: You not going to tell me where to travel!

Trashed it! Back to SAMSUNG. Get worldwide warranty and service !!!

You could have just went to one of the many phone repair places and had a new battery fitted

yes horrid customer service attitude from the phone company but no need to trash the phone..that's buying a new car every time you get a puncture in the a tyre 😋

My Pixel works excellent here

I bought 8 pro from shopee. It came brand new from china. Bootloader unlockable (Can install GrapheneOS).

From the research I did beforehand USA is basically the only country locking bootloaders. Normally Verizon.

My Pixel 8 Pro works fine....its unlocked and rooted, which does cause some issues with the Thai banking apps. As such, I bought an inexpensive Samsung to get by with that stuff. HTH.

Bought a Pixel 9 last year from amazon.com sent to Thailand. Was cheaper than in my home country because Thailand import tax and shipment were less than VAT in my home country.

I wanted less bloat ware and faster updates and got both.

No problems with banking or other apps.

I asked if US GSM frequencies are the same as Thailand?...
No, US GSM frequencies are not the same as Thailand's, though most modern smartphones are designed to work in both locations.

Thailand, like most of the world, uses a 900/1800 MHz standard, while the US relies heavily on 850/1900 MHz. [1]

Works both ways if you buy a phone to take back home.

My understanding is that US Google Pixel 10's are different to the rest of the world Pixels in that they are ONLY eSIM and does not have a physical SIM slot.

I also believe that the frequency range is different and don't work in every foreign market but the majority are covered including Thailand.

The 10 Pro is a great phone, highly recommended.

In UK, if you get a phone "on contract" which i would never do, it's usually locked to the provider, O2, Virgin, EE etc at least for the duration of the contract. (I'm not sure about the bootloader though)

However, most high streets have shops who will unlock the phone for you. You can also download software and do it yourself.

most phone manufacturers these days don't allow boot loader unlocking which is why the pixel is a popular choice for people looking for that

worth noting here that True Esim doesn't yet support pixel. Unless that's changed since they told me around 2 months ago. I had issue with physical AIS sim. It just stopped working in the pixel (but worked in other phones) after about a week. They recommended I get a new sim, so I switched to their esim instead and haven't had issues again.
