I like having a nice place, but I could do without it, and I care about the AC less and less as I get older.

I have no air in that apartment and I am fine with out it. And, yes, getting older (73) nature is on our side.

Nice apartments at the entrance to my gated community. A row of shop houses that didn't sell, so the top 2 floors became 2 condos and the bottom floor rented as a shop. About 50 condos and 25 shops. T

Would bargirl sound better than prostitute ?

Same thing though , just different words used

Be interested in meeting guitar players who just like to have fun. I'm near Don Mueang Airport/Surisuk Village. And yes, that is the apartment I rent and I also rent a university student apartment here in Japan for 20000 yen a month, free water and internet. I currently travel back and forth even at the age of 73, I do what I want and that is to live a non-cluttered life. I'd like to ship these to Thailand, but I'll probably just carry one at a time, not sure, would like to sell all but the Les Paul Gibson.my guitars.jpg

Give then away and make some kids happy!

Looking to see whether anyone left a ring behind ?

I am not really sure the point of this dumb thread...

But 20 years ago I used to rent a fairly ok apartment in Pattaya for 3500 a month but the electric rate was double the government rate so when it was hot, the electric bill was often the same as the rent...Back then the bar girls did rent some real <deleted> rooms for 2000 a month I saw....Horrid places....I don't know if its even possible to rent that cheap anymore..

I rented an apartment in Chiang Mai in the Thai community for ฿1900 / month. I don't know what other people want, but the room was a place with a bed and hang-out. Most of the time I was not in my apartment, but out doing things in town. It was fine. If I moved back I'd do the same again.

You should of worked and done overtime and saved instead of taking sick days every Monday

morning

,then you would of retired with quality of life rather than living in a windowless hot fan room

You were told by many on here but you persisted in not working

Well, I did show you the apartment I am currently renting and have rented for the last 2 years. The landlord lowered the rent recently from 2500 baht now to 2000 baht. I think the reason was, at that rental price she and I both know what to expect from the tenants.

It's true, at 73 I'm able to live in Japan and maintain an apartment in the Don Mueang district. Have Thai car and motorcycle license, this is all done ONLY on my Social Security which many of us here know if we have lived overseas after the age of 40, our SS is NOT that much.

I do have a Japanese and Thai blog, not sure if I can post it here though.

like your setup because you seem to like it. I need more space because I have a partner and she likes to do her own thing and so do I. I see two challenges which I wonder how you address. Finding a quality partner would be very difficult and if you did, it would be awkward in such a tiny space. If you are a single guy, have enough savings for your visa, and enjoy live regardless if you have a partner or not, then life is great. It is extremely simple and no anxieties. Much respect!

I've created that environment with many extras but have set it up where everything is paid which includes homes, vehicles, and even electricity and water (solar). Now i'm in cruise control and I need to search out anxiety that is healthy in moderation. I bet our ongoing budgets are close but I had to invest loads upfront to get to where I'm at.

I appreciate your kind comment. Please follow, I'll write more of how I survive on SS living in Japan and Thailand. I also have a Thai car and motorcycle license. My lady and I, we have and still continue do charity ( small ) at Mery House in Chonburi and “Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Girls’ Home.” Thank you for reading my post.

I'm 59 and probably won't be touching SS until 70. It is my safety net if I screw-up somehow :) If I wait till 70 which should be easy enough then I will get a much larger check and can live comfortably on it and get a visa. Just a plan and it might change.

The thing about hitting 70 years of age, one must not slow down if possible. I'm a full time cyclist here in Japan and other then being shipped around with the misses, I'm a full time cyclist here, but I do hope to increase my motorcycle rides. I've downsized everything in Thailand and what you saw is the truth, but of course the misses has her own property 2 minutes away, so the apartment is really a roof over my head at night time. OK, if you want more info on Japan and Thailand ( mostly Japan ) PM me. I have a cycling/camping blog with many views over the last 7 years.

Life changes faster then we think it does. Like the saying goes, "you can't grab the wind".

Good for you!

I was also a cyclist but almost died in 2015 and the heelish pain I went through altered my life:) Now I'm a runner and compete all over THailand. I've won some big races pre-covid when I was a little younger :) Now, I just tell myself if I got serious.... In reality, life is good and don't need races to define me which is good. I usually race a few times a year at the bigger events and am satisfied with age group wins.

I respect the simplicity of your life. It really isn't that complicated but many haven't figured that out. I'll shoot you a PM!

- 4TH YORKSHIREMAN:Who would’ve thought, thirty years ago, we'd all be sittin’ here drinkin’ Château de Chasselas, eh?

- ALL: Nah.

- 1ST: In them days we were glad to have the price of a cup of tea.

- 2ND: A cup of cold tea.

- 4TH: Without milk or sugar.

- 3RD: Or tea!

- 1ST: In a cracked cup, an’ all.

- 4TH: Oh, we never used to have a cup. We used to have to drink out of a rolled up newspaper.

- 2ND: The best we could manage was to suck on a piece of damp cloth!

- 3RD: But you know, we were happy in those days, though we were poor.

- 1ST: Because we were poor. My old dad used to say to me, "Money doesn't buy you happiness, son."

- 4TH: He was right.

- 1ST: Aye.

- 4TH: I was happier then and I had nothing! We used to live in this tiny, old, tumbled-down house with great big holes in the roof.

- 2ND: House! You were lucky to live in a house! We used to live in one room, all twenty-six of us, no furniture, half the floor was missing, and we were all huddled together in one corner for fear of falling.

- 3RD: Eh, you were lucky to have a room! We used to have to live in the corridor!

- 1ST: Oh, we used to dream of livin’ in a corridor! Would've been a palace to us. We used to live in an old water tank on a rubbish tip. We got woken up every morning by having a load of rotting fish dumped all over us! House? Huh.

- 4TH: Well, when I say 'house' it was just a hole in the ground covered by a sheet of tarpaulin (tarp), but it was a house to us!

- 2ND: We were evicted from our hole in the ground; we had to go live in a lake!

- 3RD: You were lucky to have a lake! There were a hundred-and-fifty of us livin’ in a shoebox in the middle of the road!

- 1ST: Cardboard box?

- 3RD: Aye.

- 1ST: You were lucky. We lived for three months in a newspaper in a septic tank. We used to have to get up every morning at six o'clock, clean the newspaper, go to work down the mill: fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence (6 pennies) a week, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt!

- 2ND: Luxury!

We used to have to get out of the lake at six o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of hot gravel, work twenty hour day at mill for tuppence (2 pennies) a month, come home, and dad would beat us around the head and neck with a broken bottle, if we were lucky!

- 3RD: Well, of course, we had it tough. We used to have to get up out of the shoebox in the middle of the night, and lick road clean with tongues! We had to eat half a handful of freezing-cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at that mill for fourpence (4 pennies) every six years, and when we got home... our dad would slice us in two with a bread knife.

- 4TH: Right...

I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, eat a lump of cold poison, work twenty-nine hours a day down the mill, and pay the mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home... our dad would kill us and dance about on our graves singing "Hallelujah."

- 1ST: And you try to tell the young people of today that ... they won't believe you.

- ALL: No, They won't.

I have never really had any understanding of the concept of monastic level deprivation. I guess I've always been fortunate enough to be able to afford a nice home. I find a great deal of peace out of mind and pleasure living in a place that's inspiring, rather than depressing.

I guess if you can't afford a nice place, you have to live where you can. I just don't understand the guys who can afford a nice place and yet deprive themselves of that in their remaining years.

I try to rent decent apartments long stay - in the 20k area with gym and pool.

For hotels and traveling I indulge the plusher places from time to time, but also like good cheap guest houses as well.

My favorite place is off a side alley near Democracy Monument in Bangkok. Bare fan room with a walled off corner for hand flush bog and shower, breakfast on the veranda, family owned. But it does have a bed - that's a must except when on the run.

500/night right now. Near Fan Fah terminus for Khlong Saen Saep boat into Siam.

Only better are GHs near Fortress at river, but they're more sophisticated and pricy. Less of a local feel.
