Nice apartments at the entrance to my gated community. A row of shop houses that didn't sell, so the top 2 floors became 2 condos and the bottom floor rented as a shop. About 50 condos and 25 shops. T

I rented an apartment in Chiang Mai in the Thai community for ฿1900 / month. I don't know what other people want, but the room was a place with a bed and hang-out. Most of the time I was not in my apartment, but out doing things in town. It was fine. If I moved back I'd do the same again.

I have never really had any understanding of the concept of monastic level deprivation. I guess I've always been fortunate enough to be able to afford a nice home. I find a great deal of peace out of mind and pleasure living in a place that's inspiring, rather than depressing.

I guess if you can't afford a nice place, you have to live where you can. I just don't understand the guys who can afford a nice place and yet deprive themselves of that in their remaining years.

I go twice or 3 times a year, and I pay nothing since my family owns a big house, and the only reason we reside in OZ is because of my pension and health insurance, and my Thai wife makes up to 65 AUD per hour being a head nurse.

Double sadly are the annoying duplicate posting when commenting on this forum 😕

I have no idea how that happened, maybe the moderators can take care of it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Nice apartments at the entrance to my gated community.

A row of shop houses that didn't sell, so the top 2 floors became 2 condos and the bottom floor rented as a shop. About 50 condos and 25 shops. The condos currently rent for 2,500 (Inc furnishing, fan, WiFi) an extra 1,000bht a month if you want air-conditioning.

Market, swimming pool, 7-11, lotus, restaurants all within 100m.

But she is a head nurse, in Pattaya that would only cost you a couple of hundred baht, how many can you do in one hour

Eh...That's luxury. I was living in an old shoe with the laces untied. Had to enter where the sole had come apart from the upper. (tongue in cheek).

It was free.

I put myself in that category, (not sure about the reamining years part!) but personally, it's not deprivation for me.......I just find it liberating living a minimalist lifestyle..........Admittedly, I may get fed up with it down the line, but for now, and already after a few years, I'm keeping it simple...........

It's true, at 73 I'm able to live in Japan and maintain an apartment in the Don Mueang district. Have Thai car and motorcycle license, this is all done ONLY on my Social Security which many of us here know if we have lived overseas after the age of 40, our SS is NOT that much.

I do have a Japanese and Thai blog, not sure if I can post it here though.

Many people believe that air conditioning and hot water are essential, but we can thrive without them. Embracing a simpler lifestyle can lead to greater appreciation for the basics and help us understand that we don't always need excess.

2500 is the cheapest I saw in photos but why move to Thailand to sleep on a floor.

You are a troll. Never here to discuss topics. Get a life.

You are describing yourself perfectly!

Yet again!

Not in Thailand, but I have stayed in worse places.

In 2000 there was an apartment building in the industrial zone that had air conditioning and private bath for B750, B1,500 for a one bedroom.

Here you go

  • Chumphon & Pathiu: These areas offer some of the lowest rates in the country, with basic rooms starting as low as 1,200 THB ($33) per month. Locations like Monmanee Mansion or Tormai Dormitory are popular for budget stays.

  • Kanchanaburi: Known for affordable living, you can find basic apartments such as Thunsica or Wansabai Home for 1,900 to 3,500 THB ($53–$97).

I guess I might fit into your concept of monastic level deprivation :) Many years ago, I occasionally had to do this out of financial constraints, caused by either the first or second of my Thai wives - well ex-wives shortly before that financial deprivation! I learnt how to enjoy a simple life with the smallest of incomes.

But having dumped the wives, my financial situation improved, but my need for an expensive condo etc didn't return. My working years in south-east Asia after divorce mostly involved teaching at different locations, and I got tired of struggling with several heavy bags when moving around the countries. (Even my previous hobby of ham radio and bulky radio transceivers has diminished after 2 arrests in Laos for legally enjoying my hobby...)

Nowadays, I can fit all my worldly goods into a single carry-on case, (still including mast and radio antenna for weather satellite data reception!) - it's surprising how modern technology can provide entertainment, communication and work equipment in a few small electronic devices.

Additionally, despite my income increasing as I get older (state pension + online income + in-class income), I have no need to leave any inheritance to family (apart from my Thai son), since most decided to remove themselves from that option by "cutting me off" yonks ago. I have very good medical insurance - so what's one meant to do with the extra income? As some know, I decided to use my money to try to offset (in a very minor way), the lack of education in Myanmar, which has only worsened since Covid and the military coup in 2021. Books, software app development, poster printing etc does add up in $$ as I try to help more and more schools.

So I don't regard my circumstances as 'deprivation' in any way. Perhaps 'simple living' is a better description. In any case, I am very content with my life, no stress, no worries about consumer goods, daily interaction with pretty young female Burmese teaching assistants lol. (No plans to marry again.....yet).

As to renting an apartment for $68/month, I can't quite manage that! I pay $100/month for a 60 sq m room with a swimming pool (in Siem Reap), but I'll end that rental contract in a few days when I return to Myanmar.

I like having a nice place, but I could do without it, and I care about the AC less and less as I get older.

Be interested in meeting guitar players who just like to have fun. I'm near Don Mueang Airport/Surisuk Village. And yes, that is the apartment I rent and I also rent a university student apartment here in Japan for 20000 yen a month, free water and internet. I currently travel back and forth even at the age of 73, I do what I want and that is to live a non-cluttered life. I'd like to ship these to Thailand, but I'll probably just carry one at a time, not sure, would like to sell all but the Les Paul Gibson.my guitars.jpg
