Importing Alcohol over Free Limit

Featured Replies

I understand, that when entering Thailand, one liter of alcohol can imported duty free. Does anyone know what the duty would be to declare bringing in 1.4 liters of alcohol, basically 2 bottles, 700ml each bottle?

60% tax plus vat?

But why bother? Just don't declare it. They mostly stop Thai overseas shoppers at swampy.

Depends on the booze. Most countries allow 1 liter or so, and if you have more they charge you depending on the actual cost. A $150 750ml bottle of Macallans will cost you more than a $20 750ml bottle of Black label.

In my 20 years of entering Thailand, I have been stopped twice and had my luggage x-rayed.

The duty free shops in TPE (Taipei) have a special deal, 20% discount if you buy 2 bottles 700ml each, of the higher priced beverages.

Old days, I literally carried the kitchen sink from Canada! Chainsaws, dehumidifiers, you name it. Airlines hadn't realised the cash-snatch yet.

In addition to (precious) "junk", I've brought in a helluva lots of booze. I was always pretty confident Customs would just seize it with a warning & no legal problems. Never happened, even the rare time I was put through the x-ray and the bottles were actually jingling inside!

I must have one of those faces, because I've been stopped twice

and I don't fly much.

I just came back from Japan with 3 bottles of whiskey and a small bottle of sake. I did not get stopped or questioned. Over the years I’ve come into Thailand dozens of times and only had my luggage x-rayed once and this was many years ago. I had 3 bottles of wine in my bag but was waved through without any questions.

I don't know what the duty is but it probably won't happen but if you are caught you will get a penalty .They will confiscate it and the custom boys will enjoy some after hours drinks on you.

Several years ago I tried to declare a 2 litre bottle of whisky. They looked at me as though I was daft and told me to go through the green channel.

No problem. As long as you don’t have cardboard boxes you should walk straight through customs
