How the latest technology is transforming orthopaedic treatment

For expats managing joint or back problems in Thailand, Vejthani International Hospital in Bangkok has built one of the country's most established orthopaedic programmes over more than three decades. It is the first hospital in Thailand to receive Clinical Care Program Certification across three orthopaedic programmes: Total Knee Replacement, Hip Replacement, and Lumbar Decompression and Fixation.

The certification is independently assessed and covers patient safety, surgical methods, rehabilitation protocols, and long-term outcomes. It is reviewed and renewed regularly. The Lumbar Decompression and Fixation Programme was most recently recertified in March 2024.

External recognition includes Newsweek's Best Specialised Hospital Asia Pacific 2024 in orthopaedics and the Asia-Pacific Stevie Award for Excellence in Innovation in Health Care Industries in 2023 for its Total Orthopaedic Solutions programme.

What do the programmes cover?

The knee replacement programme is for patients whose joints have deteriorated past the point where medication or physiotherapy is effective, with care extending through structured pain management and supervised rehabilitation well beyond the initial procedure.

The hip replacement programme covers both first-time procedures and revision surgeries for patients with previous implants. Hip problems typically develop gradually, with stiffness progressing into persistent pain that affects walking and daily movement, and the programme addresses both joint function and post-surgical mobility.

The lumbar programme treats spinal stenosis, herniated discs, and degenerative spine disease, conditions that commonly cause nerve compression, leg weakness, and chronic back pain.

Orthopaedic care at Vejthani also extends to shoulders, arms, hands, elbows, legs, feet, and ankles, as well as sports injuries and orthopaedic oncology.

Technology in the operating theatre

Surgery across all three programmes uses minimally invasive techniques, with microscopes and endoscopes allowing surgeons to operate through smaller openings and reduce disruption to surrounding muscle and tissue, resulting in shorter recovery times.

Robotic-assisted systems are used for both primary and revision joint replacement procedures on knees and hips, helping surgeons place implants more precisely and maintain consistency across cases. Spine surgery incorporates stabilisation technology alongside the O-arm system for 3D X-ray imaging and neuromonitoring, which provides real-time visualisation of nerve pathways during procedures.

Before treatment begins, a high-resolution MRI allows doctors to identify worn cartilage, inflamed tissue, or compressed nerves in detail. Knowing exactly what is causing the problem means treatment plans are more focused, and consultations are easier for patients to follow, giving a clearer basis of what surgery or therapy is trying to achieve.

Diagnosis and recovery as part of treatment

Rehabilitation is managed through the Vejthani Advanced Rehabilitation Centre, where recovery plans are tailored to the specific procedure and the patient's condition.

This includes structured robotic rehabilitation programs that support safe movement and track progress over time, alongside targeted pain management that helps patients move sooner and with greater confidence.

Follow-up assessments combine physical checks with recorded data to monitor how recovery is progressing, with the goal of returning patients to daily activities in a controlled way, addressing not just the joint or spine, but the patient's ability to function independently over the long term.

The hospital has operated in orthopaedics since the 1990s and is referred to by patients as the "King of Bones," a description that reflects its long-standing specialisation rather than anything self-promoted.

If knee, hip, or back pain has been affecting how you move, speaking to a specialist at Vejthani International Hospital is a practical first step toward understanding what treatment is available and what to expect from it.
