86% Increase in Racist Abuse of NHS Nurses.

Featured Replies

86% sounds very precise. I won't ask about methodology. Far more concerning (to those of us outside the UK) are the levels of physical (real) abuse nurses receive in the workplace. Neither is acceptable but any nurses would rather be called a bad name or read a mean tweet than have their face punched in by a crazy patient.

They run a "black people are all victims, white people are all oppressors" story every day.

At the other end of the scale, The Telegraph run a "hard-working middle class are being ripped off by immigrants on benefits" story every day.

They need to find stories that resonate with their readership whilst their readership loves the stories that confirm their prejudices.

I doubt very much you are in the least bit concerned.

Britain’s NHS nurses subjected to an 86% increase in racist abuse.

Perhaps time for nurses to be given the right to refuse treatment to patients who abuse them, certainly well past time to dismiss staff who engage in racist abuse.

Had the Guardian had a closer look at the data, they would have seen multiple unpleasant characteristics;

  • Abuse reflects patient frustration at the lengthy delays and poor quality of care delivered. Stressed, frightened people do react in negative ways.

  • Abusers are often under the influence of alcohol and other drugs, and/or mentally ill.

  • The threshold of labeling an incident racist abuse is low. The criteria are self determined. What is racist to one person is not to another.

  • Some NHS personnel are rude and provoke confrontations. The reality is that NHS personnel can be just as nasty as some of their patients. We have all encountered the mean nurse .

A large number of incidents are general bias, with the insult being made against the person driven by other characteristics, with race an add on. For example, calling a nurse a fat old black cow will be seen as racism against "black" rather than discrimination based upon the person being an older female. The data pool also includes a sizeable number of events related to the the jew hatred that is now acceptable in the UK. The Guardian and others conveniently ignore that aspect, preferring to nudge the focus to a biased position.

There is no denying that NHS personnel are subject to racist abuse and it has increased in recent years. However, the abuse is not driven specifically because of race alone. It is based upon assumed religious or political affiliation, size and gender too, none of which is acceptable.

Oh look, idiot justifications for abuse.

There is no justification for abuse of nursing staff.

The 3rd point very valid, the others, not so, excuses mostly, and none certainly not an excuse for abuse...............

Very much so, it grates sometimes.....................However, and this often gets me flack from some....... I gotta say, there's always other extremely well written, researched, resourced and in depth informative articles to pick from covering just about any topic worldwide of interest. Mostly fantastic journalism and in depth reads.................

What retard abuses the person giving them care except cranky old people in chronic pain OR those on drugs/ alcohol?

You should have at least tried to read the article, it answered your question.

US hospitals become worse each year, the unionized staff more uncaring. A sharp word now and then is fine. I think the worse it becomes, the sooner it can be replaced. Institutional attitudes by the hospital are the instigator here.

Also, if a nurse files a complaint because a mentally ill person said something derogatory, the nurse clearly isn't suited for the position and should be fired.

Well I would at least agree that racists are mentally ill.

Are people that hate their own race, and love immigrants mentally ill as well?

From all the blue haired, nose ring wearing fat women at the London pro-Palestine rallys I would certainly think that!

The idiocy aspect is the refusal to understand the underlying characteristics of the abuse. The idiocy is your dismissal of the same conclusions of studies sponsored by health authorities and professional bodies. It is not a justification for abuse.

  • Patient frustration is real. Try sitting in the emergency reception for 10 hours waiting as your family member is dying.

  • Do you have any idea how much of emergency Care is monopolized by the drunks, druggies and mentally ill? They go off at the slightest of incidents. They are the majority of people who are abusive.

None of the above is an excuse. The NHS general surgeries and clinics have taken over the primary care of the mentally ill. Back in the days of Bedlam, we would never have hard of these incidents because the mentally ill were kept locked up and the elderly did not live long enough to develop dementia induced psychosis. Drug offenders were not given a free pass to do as they wanted. There are literally tens of thousands of violent people walking the streets on any given day and inevitably a portion of them are in hospital.

I don’t know any such people.

Though I do have doubts over the mental well being of people insert their constant ‘immigrunting’ into any and every discussion.

That would be the surgeon’s mistake, not the nurses.

You are an open book on this issue.

Better stop reading some of my posts then.

Imagine abusing someone who's there to help you! This has nothing to do with your prejudices!

I think there are few Jewish or Muslim nurses but lots of doctors. If you want to stay sick, you should definitely avoid them!

Nurses are overworked and underpaid. Nurses in Thailand make me eager to go to hospital!

Yes, the aposematic choice of hair colour, like in nature a red frog advertising its poisonous nature. It's a sign to others to beware.

This remind's me of Fawlty Towers, when Basil woke up in hospital to tell the nurse "My God you're ugly!".
