Tony Blair: Labor is drifting and has no Proper Plan for the UK

‘No coherent plan’

Sir Tony Blair has launched his most devastating attack yet on Sir Keir Starmer, accusing Labour of drifting without a “worked-out coherent plan” as panic grips the party after disastrous election results and mounting leadership chaos.

In a brutal 5,600-word intervention, the former Labour prime minister warned that Starmer’s government risks heading for defeat unless it radically changes course on the economy, business and energy policy.

Blair dismissed claims that Labour’s crisis is simply about Starmer’s personality or poor communication, insisting the real problem is far deeper.

“It is because we don't have a worked-out coherent plan for the country in a fast-changing world,” Blair wrote, adding that Labour is currently operating from “the wrong political position” to win another term.

The remarks come as Starmer faces open revolt inside Labour following heavy election losses and the resignation of five ministers earlier this month.

Blair turns on Labour policies

Blair tore into several flagship Labour policies, warning they are actively damaging economic growth and frightening businesses.

He singled out new workers’ rights laws, above-inflation minimum wage rises and the government’s aggressive push away from North Sea oil and gas.

He also blasted Chancellor tax hikes, including the rise in employer National Insurance contributions, warning Labour appeared to be “increasing tax to pay for additional welfare spending” at a time when voters already think benefits spending is too high.

“Taken together,” Blair warned, “these measures have given headwinds not tailwinds to British business.”

The former PM urged Labour to water down parts of its green agenda and focus on cheaper energy rather than ideological climate targets.

Brexit warning and Reform threat

Blair also reignited Labour’s Brexit tensions, admitting Britain had “lost from Brexit” — but warning that simply trying to reverse it would not solve the country’s problems.

Instead, he argued Britain must rebuild economic strength first before considering any deeper relationship with Europe.

His intervention lands at a dangerous moment for Labour, with Andy Burnham preparing for a potentially explosive return to Westminster via the Makerfield by-election — a contest widely seen as a possible launchpad for a future leadership challenge.

Meanwhile, Nigel Farage and Reform UK continue surging in former Labour heartlands, piling further pressure on Starmer’s increasingly fragile leadership.

Labour split wide open

Blair stopped short of explicitly demanding Starmer’s removal, warning Labour against descending into pure factional warfare before deciding what it actually stands for.

“Trying to force the prime minister out before we know what policy direction we're bringing in, is not a serious way of conducting ourselves,” he wrote.

But behind the carefully-worded caution was a devastating reality: the most electorally successful Labour leader in modern history has effectively declared that the current government has lost its way.

With Labour MPs already openly discussing succession plans, Blair’s intervention is likely to deepen fears that the party is sliding toward a full-scale civil war just months before crucial by-elections and with Conservative Party and Reform both circling for blood.

I'm not keen on any individual in politics from whichever party they attach themselves to, however I reserve a special level of contempt for this man. Is he able in any minute scale to reflect on his decisions and impact that had?

What a nice honest chap, WMD Tony, New Labour Tony.
